cant go wrong with the vtwin powerband.

imo having all that tq down low makes it so much fun in the twisties w/out hanging out near redline.

Just love the sound of sporting L-Twins, especially with a nice set of pipes...

I'm on my second L-Twin (first L-twin was TL1000R & Currently own, ST3)...I've also had 2 vertical Twins and an Inline-4...L-Twins are just my personal preference...

    V-Twins Vs, Inline 4's

I love my V-Twin, it has so much character, the sound is great, and the power is very useable.

I am not sure that V-Twins represent the future of motorcycling, although if HD serves as precedent there isn't much of a correlation between being cutting edge and moving a lot of product.

I have never ridden an I-4 save for a few teenage rides around the block, so I have no basis of information to make any comments on the comparison.

What seems to be the case though is smaller I4's being tunable for decent low-mid range power, and bigger I4's being tuned for more usable power in street applications yet still packagable in a smaller frame. Kawi Z1000 and FZ1 are 2 examples.

The I3 seems to be the real 'triple threat' no pun intended. I did a spin around the block on a Sprint ST, now that is an awesome motor. The sound of that triple was IMHO closer to an exotic car than a motorcycle.

What I dont get is why Suzuki can't get an SV1000, hang a GSXR front end on it, put on a respectable rear shock, pump the motor for a few more HP, and swipe displaced RC51 customers and a few Duc owners who want a serious track ready twin for the lowest market price possible?

For sound and low end grunt I get all kinds of smiles riding the duc.

The I4 has it's place too... For me the Kawa is a better commuter... not because of the ergos or anything. It's less harsh to being in the "wrong" gear during those slow commutes.

Are you nuts?! My aprilia only need oil changes and 1 valve adjustment at 10k miles. I flogged the shit out of that bike on the track and it never complained.

he is nuts, my SV now has 132,000, valves have been inspected every 15k, but only adjusted twice.

oil has been changed every 3500-4000, no more, plugs & carb sync every 7.5k

    that's it

Another vote for the V-Twin here...

    I had a GSXR750 in-line and it was a sweet bike....

Sold that and got a RC51, they have about the same horsepower, but the entire reason I did that was to move from an in-line to a V-Twin.

Would I buy another in-line? HELL YEAH!

Would I trade my V-Twin for an in-line? Nope.

    Randy,

Can you post some pics of your SV? Perhaps in another thread? I haven't seen it in six years. I can only imagine what that thing looks like now with all that mileage on it.

Actually my new plan is to do the valve maint myself over this winter. I'll be buying all of the necessary tools over this fall (and getting some for christmas) and will have an entire season to get it done in time for spring. It should only take a day or two, so the odds are good that I'll have it done by March

    V-Twins Vs, Inline 4's

I hear the torque argument a lot when discussing V-twins but when it comes to sport bikes, low end torque is always sacraficed for top end power. I don't know of any sporting twins that make useable power just off idle like a cruiser. I also don't know of any cruisers that have exciting top end power without getting into enormous 2.3 liter triples (The Rocket-III is a hoot!). This is why there is a market for bikes like the Hayabusa, ZX-12R, and ZX-14, K-1200S, and K-1200R (besides the poser crowd associated with a few of them). Big bore I-4s make excellent power starting around 2500 RPMS and after that their torque numbers aren't matched by other sportbikes. Bring your RPMs up a bit and they will try and pull your arms off!

I have yet to come across a V-twin that offers me the visceral thrill of an I-4.
