I ordered one, it'll be at my place in a few days. The rental fee will be wrenching time.

I'm still debating on A) Cleaning my carb or B) Cleaning it by replacing it with one fresh out of it's shipping container...

Paul, I just got one today to clean the carb in the DRZ (and a clock movement for a grandmother clock I'm building...and my guns....). So come on over - and bring the mtb if you're still selling it!

I picked one of these up since I have to clean carbs from 3 bikes. Any guidelines what to do? What not to do? I assume no rubber or plastic or anything in the cleaner, etc.

I just did my 2nd carb yesterday. It's incredible how clean it came out.

Rubber is not affected by Simple Green. It's safe. If the rubber is easy to separate, go ahead and do it but there is no real reason to leave it out. There have been a couple of occasions where I didn't want to remove an o-ring for fear of tearing it so I just threw the entire thing in there. From all of the reading I've done online, Simple Green will not break down rubber.

Break down the carb as much as you can. Then fill basin 1/4 of the way with Simple Green. Fill rest of the space with water. Turn it on to 480 seconds and turn the heat on and let it go. I usually just keep it going for 10 or 15 minutes with the heat on, turning the part over every 5 minutes or so.

The regular Simple Green will stain the aluminum if you leave it in the dirty water sitting still for too long, so after 15 minutes of running it I rinse the parts in hot water. Then you can run them again using the same formula, although you may find that they are already insane clean and ready for reassembly.

After the initial 15 minute run I'll blow the jets and passages out with carb cleaner and them throw them in for round 2. By the end of round 2, your carb should be pretty much in new condition.

Simple Green HD (available at Home Depot) is purple in color and apparently won't stain the aluminum no matter how long you leave the parts in. You could pick up some of that if you wanted to, but I use the original green variety and just make sure to keep turning the parts every once in a while.

I think you'll be shocked at how well it works. I removed my 2nd carb from it last night after about 10 minutes of running and it looks nearly new.

Is this thing supposed to be making a constant buzzing noise? Or is it supposed to be far more active?

I've read that Simple Green HD (purple in color) available at Home Depot won't discolor aluminum.
There is now a Simple Green Motorsports product, similar to their aircraft product, that supposedly will not corrode aluminum.

Hmm... I don't want to split them... Will it still work well if you leave the tank lid open and just cover it with a bucket or whatever? Sorry for the stupid question...

Yup. That's what I do with the Hawk carbs. I essentially roll them four times. It seems to work fine. I put the lid on as best as it can fit and cover the machine with an old cloth to keep the heat in a bit better.

Used mine today. Have a very old Norelco electric shaver. The shave head was quite dirty. Four minutes in Simple Green and water and everything came out looking like new. Works like a champ.

Re: Ultrasonic cleaners: you gotta get one!

One tip for keeping your solution cleaner when cleaning nasty parts. Put some solution in a ziplock bag and put your parts in with it. Seal it up and drop it in the tank full of cleaner or water. The bag won't affect the cleaning and will keep the really nasty stuff out of your tank. This method works mint for keeping small parts from getting lost.
