Re: An Italian and an American walk into a stable...

parts have been rolling in, haven't had much time to fiddle but been doing some mockups here and there.

    - i really liked the finish on the ProTaper XR50 BMX bars but the center mount point combined with pitbike clamps isn't working out. i need the clamps closer together or they're too crooked. will have to keep trying but might need to go with different parts.

    - mini Sportster tank looks rad, i love it. think i have a mount plan.

    - brown cafe racer seat looks sweet as well, love how the stitching lines up with the frame down tubes. i'll prob chop this much smaller than the mockups below. i kinda dig the super flat, no seat look so minimal will prob be best.

few pics, Photochop of seat and tank union

tank on seatpan, you can see the rear tab i'll inset into the pan. i'm thinking horizontal line of pan > tank, but have tried angled to match motor as well.

brown diamond grips to match the seat cover.

ordering the header and UNI filter adapter today.

Cousin had a Fox Sundowner. Maybe called that as it had lights on it. KMart sold them. Seemed like a higher end version of the lawn mower engined, lawn chair tubing framed bikes.

sweet! wish i kept my '73 Lil Indian, thing was mint. i drove all the way to PA to grab it ... speaking of lights, bought one for this project and have a cool idea to wire up LED headlight and taillight to a rechargeable battery pack. would be fantastic for those late night rides back home after swillin' with the hood'lums.

Re: New vintage mini projects: '71 Bombardier + '71 Fox

small update, been fiddling with the bar mounts and BMX bars, not working out so well. not only are the angles wrong since the bars are more narrow at the mount point, but the clamps would require me to push the tank back a little further than i'd like. the turn radius on the bike is ridiculous so the clamps would constantly be smashing into the tank.

ended up ordering a billet top clamp for an early Honda ATC70, will have to chop it to fit the Fox triple, but i'm hoping i can get it to work. bars would mount forward so no interference with tank and the billet clamp is made for BMX bars so it has proper spacing.

i've had zero time for these projects but i threw the bars from The Champ and a temp tank on the Fox last night and took 'er for a rip. without a seat it rattles your teeth! hahaa. pipe came loose and rotated so that the muffler was pointed right at the steel seat pan. H O T !

    mad fun.

Re: New vintage mini projects: '71 Bombardier + '71 Fox

messed around with the Fox over the weekend. tightened a ton of loose bolts, set chain tension, gave it a bath, degreased motor, fresh oil and fill cap, new rear shocks. ripped two nice laps of the hood then the torque converted decided to lock up. the vintage cover has been repaired with fiberglass a bunch of times and sorta permanently fixed, which sucks. i have to cut a bolt to get the cover off and inspect what the issue is.

motor runs flawlessly but it's a paint shaker. intake came loose and almost fell off. hahaa. every ride is an experience, the road rash is gonna HURT.

threw the old seat on temporarily to not get burned again.

the Fox got some fatty sneaks

also started cutting the plastic seat pan that i'll mold to the metal pan then drill bolt holes to mount it. the rear stock bolt holes may line up perfectly, which would rock.

the seat pan on the bike is squared off so i'll trim the edges to have the rear rounded like the plastic pan. should look nice.

had a belt issue that made the bike unridable. luckily i broke down right in front of the house but ordered some new belts to test. found the issue ... PO was good at following directions and mounted the belt as it says to, 'THIS SIDE TO ENGINE' ... only problem is the clutch is asymmetrical and the belt was on backwards. surprised it lasted for as many rides as it did. all good now.

the forks are a mess. took them apart and the internal springs are bent to shit + they are missing some sort of mount to keep them in place. lift the front end and they just fall apart. may just clean them up and make them rigid by either bolting or welding solid.

I'm not sure what I hate more... that you're using imgrepo, or the fact that my work laptop blocks that URL.

Prob the latter as I don't know enough about imgrepo to form an opinion.

that sucks, i know you had that issue before. when i post pics this site wants an https reference, which is maybe related (?) the domain + host is my own account, an 'image repository'. wonder if i need to tweak some settings. will take a look but thought it was resolved.

Nah, it's not you. It's because my work laptop & network security straight up block it. It does that to a LOT of domains. Facebook, Twitter, reddit, imgur....

thanks! still got a ways to go but hopefully kids games get rained out tomorrow so i can crank in the garage. once the Fox is good i need to move to the Bombardier! so bummed the motor is locked up. blah.

that JR50 would be fun to restore, brings back memories for sure. essentially my first true dirt bike experience on one of those as a kid. cousins had a JR + an ATC70 that i got to rip around on. we were on Briggs powered minis so the JR was a REAL bike!
