    Unhappy Wearing gear...

So I was volunteering at a bicycle race yesterday...

Driving the "follow car" with an official during the 2nd wave of races.

3 Guys go down at around 45mph... apparently hitting in the dirt rather than on the pavement.

3 helmets reduced to little pieces of foam the size of packing peanuts, several rung bells, lots of road rash, and one guy with broken ribs, a punctured lung, and a bunch of other injuries. He ended up on life support in the ambulance before they took him off to the hospital.

Pretty freaky... too bad they weren't able to wear gear.

And makes me wonder why I was racing so much when they got hurt so bad going for such a trivial prize. And it seemed odd that for such a nasty injury the officials won't call the race.

The whole scene was gross enough that I didn't really sleep much last night.

    Ben

"trivial" as in there's really nothing to be gained but personal amusement for such things as knee dragging, wheelie-ing, etc. It just isn't worth any damage to you or your bike...

I'm feelin ya brotha... however He raced bicycles not motorcycles

    Don't you pay attention!!!

Mystery Squid I agree with ya on the "trivial" pursuit of amusement I try pretty hard to keep the "stupid" stuff to a minimum on my bike, especially when you spend 16-18+ k on a bike..... you don't want to fuck it up for a cheap little stunt. That's what the "second" bike is for

I can see where squid is coming from. Bicycles, motorcycles, skiing, bungee jumping, football, hockey...you can take part in high risk activity, but if you are not smart - you are going to be taking a lot of risk. Hell, even the prudent are out there taking risks.

I could be putting along and easily get slid into at a light, or run off a bridge on the highway...the ways we can die on a bike are endless. Is it worth it to push those chances even further by running north of 100 mph, peg-scraping, ansd stunting?

That's up to you...If the rush is worth the chance of bodily harm, if you have to see the edge to live a sane life, then you know your answer.
