    whos got an R6?

this is gonna sound like weird request but if you have an R6 can you measure the size of the hole for the ram air (height and width). or if anyone has any kind of bike with a centrally located ram air (new CBR or RSV or RC) ive got an idea that im trying to work out.

    whos got an R6?

I've got an '04 R6, just measured the ram-air opening for ya

    fairing opening:
    total height = 2"
total width at bottom = 8"
there's about a 1" rounded radius to the upper corners that bring the length down to 6" across the top. in the lower corners inside the opening there are tabs & bolts that fasten the fairing to the plastic grill inside the opening, so the actual opening inside is about an even 2" x 6" , so a net ram-air area of about 1 square foot.

was dark in the garage and i didnt have a flashlight with me, but those dimensions should be fairly close.

    whos got an R6?

Kawi's usually had the edge when it comes to ram air induction (guessing that's due partly because of their involvment in the aerospace industry?). Think I saw a chart somewhere that some of kawi's designs have shown a HP increase at as little as 85mph. Most designs weren't really effective until 90 or 100. It's not just the opening that matters it's the plumbing.

IE, it's probably not worth your trouble

    whos got an R6?

well that would be for "real" ram air. the problem with the SV is its inability to get enough air. i figured if i could get the piece of plastic that is in the nose of... say an R6...and run a tube through the frame up to the general vicinity of the air box it would help. they make a ram air box for the SV but you need flatslides.
i thought about the side holes like on the ZX7 and the SRAD GSXRs but i dont know if i can make that work as easily. maybe.

    whos got an R6?

i bet the kawi airducting system like on my bike would be pretty easy to slap on the bottom of your fairing. Time to find a wrecked ZX600J model w/ an intact nose piece.

    whos got an R6?

I think you're going to run into issues with the differences in intake volume/speed/frequency between the 4-cylinder bike and the V-twin.

What about a Duc or a TL? Any of those you can try and steal the design from?

    Sounds like a fun project.

    whos got an R6?

the TLR has side ram air like the F4i. i could easily just cut a round hole and cram some pre heater hose in there but i didnt want to be that ghetto.

and its not about intake speed/velocity blah blah... it just about getting more air under the tank.

    whos got an R6?

Point being just sticking a tube there is no guarantee you're going to get any more air. Stick the wrong diameter or length on there and you could end up with a pressure wave that lowers air pressure in the airbox and rob power.

It's gotta be tuned just as carefully or more carefully then a pipe.

    whos got an R6?

so.... maybe a zx9 or 7 system would be best. i just think it will cause more turbulent air under the tank. which means more air available to be used by the motor

    whos got an R6?

Yah so I think the article still may be helpful but at the very end they tested a bike without ram air and it actually had *lower* then atmospheric pressure in the airbox.. so they did come to the conclusion that any system could help.. just maybe not as much as the best.

I'd love to see them redo that test now that the manufacturers have kicked headlights to the curb and made the ram air systems so important.
