Re: Who's still ridin' to work?

I'm riding to work. But, unlike many of you I live where the commute is a relaxed ride. My commute is 15 miles of rural, twisty roads that starts at 1400 feet and where the temps are at least 10 degrees cooler than in the valley where I work. It's hot when I leave work, but soon gets cooler and cooler as I head home.

I've been riding in, very toasty in the afternoon, mornings feel just about perfect. This moring was a different story though, I was soaked from a downpour I encountered, still not fully dry 7 hours later!

Very hard to dry out! No lunch ride, but I am out at 230. Just found out both my dad and supervisor rode to work in their jeeps without tops and had no idea rain was coming this morning! They'll be the wet ones on the ride home!

I've been riding all week. Tuesday and Wednesday were pretty brutal, luckily there were so few people out I wasn't idling long.

I work nights so I have no idea what you're all talking about with the heat.. I only drive the Jeep to work if I plan on playing golf in the morning.

The doors are off my Jeep from late April-late October (heated seats ). Keep the soft top up, and you don't get to wet while driving. Toss a garbage bag over the seat so you don't get swamp ass on the ride home and your fine if it rains while your out.

I have been off and on. I road in 2 days this week in my perforated jleather both times. On Tuesday it was 98 degrees, I have a 55 mile commute. Oh and they just repaved a bunch of 495 in brand new blacktop lol. I was dying. I'll be riding in a lot more once I move closer to work.

Re: Who's still ridin' to work?

I finally took the bike to work today. 17 miles each way of nothing back nice back roads!
When I got to work I found I was leaking brake fluid again, it was all over the tank/windscreen, display etc. I took a few minutes when I got to work and fixed it. Either the res was pulled while riding or loading for Monticello, or I never installed it in the correct position. The res was to far away and was pulling away from the clutch lever which made the hose slightly break away and allow fluid to spray out when engaging the clutch. I am replacing the spring tension clamps with the hose clamps with the screw adjusters...

Problem I have in the morning is I love my Dunkins Coffee and Music for the ride in. I can get the music on the bike, but hot coffee out of a camelback doesn't taste the same...

I went without the coffe today, I hope I make it throu the day ok.....

I need to take the bike more often to save $, my truck gets 13-14 MPG, where the bike gets more than 25 MPG. I still need to figure what it's getting, I haven't kept track yet.

Re: Who's still ridin' to work?

I do. No, really - I DO! Usually on Tuesdays & Wednesdays. Mondays I bring Tovah to work with me and Thursdays I bring both Tovah & Canaan and I don't work Fridays. My commute ranges from 40 - 55 miles one way, depending on which way I take. Usually in the morning I take the quickerest most direct route. Sometimes in the afternoon though I get more creative...

My car and bike almost have the same fuel efficiency so either way it doesnt make a difference. Only way it would make a difference is if I rode the bike super easy and kept the RPM's down low but there's no fun in that.

Re: Who's still ridin' to work?

Since I drive into the city I see nasty traffic on the pike. I don't understand how any of you guys can wear gear when it gets over 100. I gave it a try one day and I swear sweat was coming through my mesh jacket and my jeans never really dried out until 3 hrs later.

I think I want to be a squid and come in with a helmet and a t-shirt and jeans, but when I finally get up to speed on the pike once in a while, there's no f'ing way I'll be without gear.

But... for this season I just lost my bike in the storm with some perfect timing for my first daughter, so no more riding for a little while, a nice cold car with a/c and a baby seat in the back will put a grin on my face for a while

Re: Who's still ridin' to work?

I ride to work, 10 minute commute. Sucks having to put gear over long pants, a shirt and a tie in this weather. Taking off the windshield helps though.

Re: Who's still ridin' to work?

I try to ride the V-Strom (a nearly perfect commuter) to work as I usually ride during the week so that weekends are reserved for family. We have three different offices so the ride is 18-52 miles one way. If I go to the NH office I sometimes peel off back roads around Lake Masabesic so it becomes a 65-70 mile one-way ride. Also take off when possible for the Advrider TOR: no 50 mile limit....

Usually wear an Olympia AirGlide hi-viz jacket and pants. If it's really warm, I wear shorts and a tshirt underneath and change at work and for the ride home. Also remove the tall windshield and go without or use a cut-down stock windshield.

The Zumo and media player has added a lot to commuting. I usually record NPR podcasts and listen to those. Also if you feel like taking a different route, it'll keep pointing you in the right direction. Also made color laser copies of map sections near the commute cut down to put in the tank bag map pocket so I can detour more extensively if I feel like it.

The V-Strom has hand guards, heated grips and a hookup for a Gerbing jacket, so I can start fairly early and end the season in November. I'd go later but have to park on the sidewalk, which is also where snow goes. Ridden 2K miles so far this season, at least half commuting. I expect to ride around 6K miles this season.

I'm still riding, though I go through tires quick, upto 120+ miles highway depending on the office.

I've been ridding to work everyday also. The commute is only about 6 miles each way. My truck is fairly broken down and clapped out with no money to fix it or buy a new one. I'll ride the bike as much as possible and try to hold out fixing the truck until fall. I picked up HP's VFR on Father's Day and have been riding just about every day since.
