I'm on the side that intentionally lying about something to benefit by deceit is immoral and unethical. Doing that for a product you are selling someone fits my personal definition of ripping someone off.
I give him the benefit of the doubt because I believe he was misinformed himself.
And I wasn't trying to start the next "I refused to show my ID" thread here hah
I don't need to do any discrediting at all; you're the one who is defending the misrepresentation of items for sale.
And I do not think you're right even on the definition issue. If you misrepresent something in order to raise the price or otherwise fool the buyer, that's a ripoff.

Lying and ripping off are two completely separate things. Yes, one can lie in an attempt to rip someone off but they are not the same thing.
I am not debating the ethics involved with lying nor am debating the ethics of ripping people off...hell, I'm not even disagreeing with the ethics of it.
I am saying that lying can lead to someone being ripped off but lying on its own does not automatically equal ripping people off. There must be a transaction taking place at which point the rip off occurs.
No one has ever said "I was ripped off" after reading some bogus sale ad because the rip off hasn't taken place. Only the lying has taken place.
As defined by Merriam-Webster:
rip–off
Pronunciation: \ˈrip-ˌȯf\
Function: noun
Date: 1969
1 : an act or instance of stealing : theft ;
You omitted the 2nd deffinition:
2 : a usually cheap exploitive imitation
Google defines it as :
"a fraud or swindle, especially something that is grossly overpriced."
And the Cambridge Dictionary:
an act of cheating someone by charging too much or not giving anything of value for money spent

i see what bergs is getting at. its not a rip off until money exchanges hands. you and i can see the ad is a ripoff because we are informed buyers. someone else who isnt, will in fact...be ripped off.
whatever...kids a fucking retard. im sure enough people have "wasted his time" that he should maybe doing some research and pricing his bike accordingly. he should also realize that not all that is gold and yellow is Ohlins.

Classic....
The guy's not ripping someone off right NOW, he's just TRYING to rip someone off by lying about what he's selling... so lets all argue the definition of what is/is not a "rip off".
Such a worthwhile debate we're having here

Again... defending/debating shit that has no business being defended/debated.
SERIOUSLY, Paul.....You're arguing about the semantics between TRYING to rip someone off and HAVING ripped someone off... Stop creating arguments where there doesn't need to be an argument.

Can everyone just SHUT UP??
Dad,
Last I checked I, as well as others, are free to respond to anything that is posted on this forum. I am not sure why you are this upset about something that didn't otherwise involve you. If this is a case of WGAF, then why do you enough to respond?
Thought it was friendly conversation/ debate but I guess it's more along the lines of offensive.
Sorry that I made you upset.
I DON'T give a shit about the definition of what is/isn't a rip-off... Not really sure that anyone does.
I DO give a shit about how often you start arguments where they're otherwise completely unnecessary.
And as usual you take the hypocritical (the sale of this bike doesn't involve you, either), condescending ("Dad"? GFY.) , holier than thou (starting shit where shit isn't needed is a friendly debate?) defense approach to anyone that calls you out on it.
Whatever. This is why I can't fuckin stand your online persona.

It is a rip-off now, as advertised. After the transaction occurs, it was a rip-off. But whatever, we're arguing the semantics of a 40-year old colloquialism. Not exactly established in terms of language. I'm not sure debating is a total waste of time if you learn something though. I learned rip-off was in the dictionary.
But it's straying from the point; the guy lying with his ad. And the debate that hasn't occurred yet: the division of responsibility between buyer and seller. Most of us think the ad qualifies as a rip-off, so I assume we think its wrong to sell it that way. But if someone falls for it, and later discovers it wasn't an R as advertised, too-bad-so-sad? Or should they have legal recourse to un-do the transaction?
