I agree that it is a better beginner bike. Having rented the new Bonneville 1200

In any case, I would do a TU250X for the first year or two and then sell it for the same price or similar to what I bought it and upgrade
Maybe... You call it sensitive. I call it responsive. :-)

I still think the almost 100 lbs. weight advantage the Street Triple has over the Street Twin can't be discounted. Perhaps it is a good idea to go with the TU250X for a while and then upgrade...to a Street Triple!

Updating as 2018’s are hitting the showrooms.

Stopped by Parkway specifically to look at the CB500F ABS and CBR500R ABS. They expect the ‘18 CBR next week. Had a leftover CB500F, which is identical drive train with naked bike styling and straight bars.
    2018 CB500F Overview - Honda Powersports

    2018 CBR500R Overview - Honda Powersports

They also proposed the Yamaha YZF R3 ABS. 375 lbs wet but may have a little too sporty riding position.
2018 Yamaha YZF-R3 Supersport Motorcycle - Model Home

Going to bring her by the next week or two. My wife is 5’7 with a long inseam, but I’d also like it to fit my daughter, 5’6 and about a 30” inseam, I think.

I saw the new ninjette 400 the other day, which looks awesome too.
Pilgrim down in Plymouth has one sitting on the floor, as well as the 690 and 390 dukes. Ktm supposedly just announced some rebates and stuff last week, so it could be a worthy drive down.

    Re: Wife bike choices

R3 in no way has a sportbike riding position. Like the entry Ninjette (now the 400), it's a faired beginner/commuter bike.

I'm 5'7" if I eat my Wheaties and also have a 30" inseam.

Given that I'm similar in stature to your daughter, I'd look at:

    Yamaha R3
    Yamaha FZ-07
Yamaha XSR700 (really nice take on the whole retro naked thing, same motor as the FZ-07)
Kawasaki Ninja 400 (polarizing styling, but it's sitting smack dab in the cost/power/weight sweet spot... looks better in person)

None of the smaller Hondas do anything for me.

Suzuki... it was said above. The SV has a great motor but I like the equivalent Yamahas better overall

Short/narrow bikes are more important if the rider has little experience; my street bike is a GSX-R 750 which is narrow but has a 31.9" seat height. I can put one foot flat on the ground and the other solidly on the ball of the foot. I can manage an R6 but I'm on tiptoes, which makes it a PITA on real-world roads.

Don’t know if it’s the weather or just approaching Spring, but suddenly there are a number of low mileage used models of above hitting CL.

    I think the classic

Buy a good used bike and buy her real attgatt stuff

There is almost certainly a chance she will lay it down

Buy the new bike when/if she wants to keep riding

Not to be Debbie downer but with 50 years experience I have seen this play out many times

Totally agree. I would look for a used TU250X. No ABS, but it is also hard to lock those brakes...

Yes, sorry...missed that part. I had a 2009 Er6n at some point, a naked Ninja 650. it was light, short and very easy to ride. They are rare, but if you spot one they are reliable and very easy to ride. They fetch around $3-$3.5k

Careful with this approach. My wife loves the test bike so much she won’t even discuss upgrading it...which affects me only because the test bike isn’t suitable for the longer rides that I think she’d love to go on with me IF she (also) had a bike that was good for that.

    Re: Wife bike choices

    2016 CB500F with 2,160 miles and “pre-dropped.” LED lights.

Ordered windscreen, center stand, 12V outlet, heated grips. 30.7” seat height, 414 lbs wet. Most riders seem to grow out of these after a few thousand miles, but we have teenagers coming of age as well.

Rode it around the neighborhood. A friend of mine had a CB450 and this is light years ahead in every way.

Here’s the power curve. Nice flat torque should make it easy to ride.

    Borderline too fast

Where are the aircooled 500 twins with like 25 HP

    Now part B

Wife likes to ride and always wants to be included at 5 MPH under the posted speed limit

Nobody rides anymore, or both get HArleys and hang out a bars with other funny dressed accountants

That's the boat I was in when my wife wanted to start riding a motorcycle. She'd ride under the limit and be good for about 50 miles. She just wasn't confident on it. Then we got her a Spyder..., now I need to tell her to slow down and that I need to stop and stretch my legs. Yeah it's a Spyder and everyone cries because they're not "real" motorcycles but hey, we don't look at it as a motorcycle, it's more of a snowmobile on wheels.

    Re: Wife bike choices

These Honda 500’s are pretty neat. “Gentlemen of a certain age” are buying both the 500X Adventure-style model and 500F to replace heavier bikes, taller bikes, people are commuting averaging 70-80mpg, and they are being outfitted as lightweight tourers.

Hope to ride it to the Yankee Beemers breakfast Sunday, depending on how the roads look. The latest forecast for Boston is 14-21” of snow.
