Winter Projects - what's on the agenda?

Just curious what you guys/gals have planned for the winter?

Picked up a Big Buddy heater and it actually warms up my shop enough to do some wrenching.. maybe not the cheapest/safest but pretty happy I can get out there in the chilly months.

Probably be focusing on the gixxer this winter, with a few other side projects & some work on the DR. Have some parts waiting, some yet to come, but loosely planning the following:

    1. Inspection/general cleanup
    2. 520 chain kit, SpeedoDRD & Vortex sprockets (-1/+2, eek)
    3. Brakes - pads, braided lines
    4. Tires - maybe some Pirellis?
    5. Suspension - *maybe* go over the forks, do some setup at a minimum, been following some of Dave Moss's videos which are very helful and the bike feels very pitched for me
    6. Valve check/adjust
    7. Coolant flush/check

Just basic stuff for the most part, on the fence about a PC/bazzaz and will probably hold off until I can ride & tune next year.

FJ needs the carbs done but I may or may not be keeping her... had a few people interested in buying

Aside from bikes, some work on the truck, pretty excited for some snowboarding/snowshoeing/camping and hopefully lots of lazy days with the fam.

Re: Winter Projects - what's on the agenda?

    1) Winter maint on the FZR. Got a lot of cleaning and TLC lined up. Brake system flush and clean, wiring cleanup and possibly a new harness, etc.
    2) Rebuild Mistake. Got a new top end, just need to do a parts order and start the assembly.
    3) Diag and prep 600. Going to try life in the MW lane...
    4) Run KTM on the ice, assuming I can beg/borrow/steal/buy tires, after I inspect the jetting and adjust for the cold

Re: Winter Projects - what's on the agenda?

    1. Get myself back in shape
    2. Get my $300 GS running right, finally (ya right)
    3. Get my KDX in tip-top shape. Needs a fork rebuild, possibly a piston, and lots of little stuff.
    4. Return my NESR-gifted windsurfer to service. Not sure how feasible epoxy work is in the cold though.

My big buddy heater will also be getting plenty of action.

Re: Winter Projects - what's on the agenda?

I'm trying to figure out how far I want to go with my KDX220. The rational human says I should just change the and do a suspension refresh with proper spring rates. I can get in and out of that project for a decent price and it'll be ready for next season.

The other part of me wants to tear it down to the frame and make it a fresh new bike with all new bushings, bearings, frame epoxy coat, fresh top end, new plastics, and upgraded lighting and electrical....then do a KX fork swap and apparently a GasGas EC200 Ohlins shock will bolt up with minimal modification. Oh and then there's the RB carb mod and port and polished head.

I can tell you now that just in typing this out...I'll be going with option 1, this year is not the year. There's a 9 month old running around the house, I haven't setup proper heated and lit shop space in my barn yet, and I have a bathroom to build. Entering into a big project will likely just result in me not having a dirt bike to ride next year. I really want to give the KDX a full resto and upgrade treatment, the bike deserves it. I think I'll wait to start that job until I decide to buy myself something new and orange, then take a shot at it. The KDX is likely a bike I'll keep for a very long time, both as a back up and friend bike. It'll also serve my son well for his first full sizer (well, 15/16th size) when he gets there.

Yes, option 1 plus perhaps at least greasing chassis bearings. Keep er as close to stock as possible IMO. It's strength lies as is. For more performance go orange.

    1. fitness. gotta lose a little weight and stop getting winded so easily.
    2. I painted my track bikes, gotta get them covered with stickers and put some numbers on them. beyond that they're ready to go.
    3. either send out my dirt bike suspension for an oil change, or sell it and buy a 500 EXC.
    4. get plans and permits for a 30X40 ish attached garage and start construction/pay someone to start construction.

Re: Winter Projects - what's on the agenda?

Well, I WAS gonna get all new 675 bodywork and a fresh paint job on my race bike to finally make it look fucking badass for the first time in 7 years, but then my truck decided it needed 2500 fucking dollars worth of work, so that's out the window.

Try and lay out/cut some trails.

    Renovate master bathroom.

    Renovate kitchen.

Build some built in shelving in the dining room.

I didn't ride enough last year, so the bikes need nothing.

Re: Winter Projects - what's on the agenda?

Finish my basement (install base trim, repaint heat register thingies, install carpet, new fridge, maybe get the projector we've been talking about)

Refresh my 1956 Evinrude Fisherman 5.5hp (points, condensers, impeller, carb kit)

Start getting the big boat ready for a planned ocean voyage in 2 yrs (rebed cabin windows and hatches, update electronics and safety items)

Clear out all the bike related items (bikes, gear, trailer)

Continue shifting my life path to enjoy the numerous other experiences out there

Drop much pine for the garage

Make the time and commit to finally getting my GED (yep, I'm a lowly dropout.....a well-paid one but a dropout nonetheless)

Pretty sure I can squeeze all that in this winter......

Re: Winter Projects - what's on the agenda?

SV#2 has a short in the wiring harness somewhere. I think I found it. Just gotta get off my ass and fix it.
KatieM could use her boingers sent out, fresh fluids and seals. A new top end and OE rads, maybe. New bearings probably wouldn't hurt anyone.
SV#1 needs the spares I just picked up bolted on; new triples, throttle assembly. Maybe take a swing at putting the plastics back together again.
WR is ready for ice. By spring it needs a kill switch and some fancy-pants numbers. Maybe a big brake kit, because I want it. Quite tempted to throw springs at it even though everyone has told me not to.
DRZ and DL650 need positively nothing, as usual.
This may finally be the year I buy that $300 worth of parts I need for the old CB and send the frame out for powder. Wouldn't that be nifty.
Pilot needs to loose about 20 lbs and about a billion more pushups.
House needs new carpet. One more room to reno and a shit-ton of little finish details. Then we list it in the spring. I hope.

I keep threatening to build a powder coating oven... What would the dimensions need to be to squeeze the frame in?

At least 50" wide/long. They don't make 'em like that anymore. Subframe/frame is one piece, all big stamped steel chunk. It's ugly. But at least its heavy. Need to finish bead blasting it too, I did a halfass job.
Don't you have a CBR to put back together?!

Re: Winter Projects - what's on the agenda?

SV650 - Swap motor on my buddies street & TD bike. Suspect a big end bearing on its way out (somebody didn't check oil level all season, ran it down to ~1 quart). New motor ready on the bench; will get a valve check before the swap.
ZX6R - Pull motor on my track ZX6R and do a little preventative maintenance (been burning oil for a bit): valve oil seals, rings, new shift star, plugs, valve clearance, CCT, PAIR removal, and a general once-over. Suspension to GMD for refresh. Test motor #2 to make sure it's a runner; update whatever is needed.
WR400 - Replace both water pump seals (leak), new fuel switch, fix carb (leaking gas, hopefully just a stuck float), get new rim/tire combo mounted up, add a bit of wiring to make her street worthy (already plated, but needs the bits to make it legal)

    House...don't get me started.

50" from tip to tail, yes? Imagine hanging it vertically for the long dimension. What would other dimensions need to be?

Yeah, I do have a CBR to reassemble. It should be pretty easy. I just need to do it. I'm semi waiting for the ability to weld aluminum, but that's an excuse. I can finish without that. I actually have approval to return to track days, so it'll happen.

ha, yeah. Not an ambitious list. But with the amount of free time I have now and foresee having in the near future, this appears doable.
