We all know there's a bit of pride mixed in there too. You only announce it and post pictures about it every chance you get.

For the cost of all that heated/specialty gear, he could go and get it with a rental and stay in a hotel for a night along the way.

another person showing ignorance of how to equip for cold weather

sport rubber works best, lower your tire pressure, the street is not a race track, and don't count on heated hear for the coldest riding, while it works well for moderate temperatures, best way to prepare for extreme cold is not heated gear

Have you ridden a sport bike on tires with the pressure dropped? Not a DL650, a full commit, monkey doing what a monkey is apt to do to a football, clip ons and rearsets sport bike? On a good day you've made it dangerous, now you're mixing in reduced traction and potential for snow / ice / rain. It's not a good idea. And that's ignoring what road salt is going to do to that poor Duc. If you think you've had corrosion issues on your Suzuki you'll be floored how fast a Duc can rot in front of your eyes.

I'm a Mainer, I've played outside in the winter for years. I stand by my experience telling me that bike, in these circumstances is NOT suitable for the ride being proposed.

I've ridden on the street and on the racetrack. The tire doesn't know the difference. If just knows how cold it is.

What was the last time you owned a sportbike with sport bike tires? And then used those super sport tires on sub freezing pavement?

Show of hands between Randy and Kurlon to see where the ignorance lies.

Man, you just don't give up.

Re: What do I need for a long winter ride?

speeds are lower on street, and a winter ride is not about peg scraping

the OP isn't talking about going for a sportride either, just droning on the highway to get from there to here

the Pirelli MTR60-Corsas I used to run on my SV650 is the same sport rubber as Pirelli's Diablo Corsas, in summer, one would be lucky to get 1000 miles out of a set, in winter 2500 miles, they get hot enuf steam rolls off them if you happen to roll over a bit of snow

    Randy.

But it's no big thing, he's right, guy won't be racing or anything. Nor will he ever need to make an emergency stop or maneuver.

And 2wd tractors get stuck less than 4wd. Yup.

You ride a Gixxer on the street. Why?

That guy has a windshield, an alternator big enough to power a microwave, a riding position that allows him to see and be seen, luggage capacity, and the appropriate clothing. I'm guessing he was out there because he really likes motorcycle riding.

    Because I like them.

You didn't even see this guy, but thanks for giving me all the details of his bike and gear. The windshield was fucking miniscule. No idea what brand or model of gear he was wearing, or if it was plugged in. Where are your consumer reports stats on seeing and being seen on different styles of bike? Good thing he had luggage capacity though, wtf.

Have fun riding in the cold if that's your thing.

Wrong again Rambo. I don't stunt and I think it's an activity as stupid as riding in 6 degree weather. I hope you find this contribution worthy. Or not.
