    Wrap pipes ?

Anyone here ever wrap your pipes to cut down on exhaust heat?

The other hot day I noticed how while putting around in traffic my bike starts to cook my leg and ass. The center up exhaust may look cool but cool its not !

I was thinking of wrapping my pipes with some thermal wrap stuff that I have seen. I heard it increases power too by increasing flow when applied on the headers.
I was thinking more toward the exhaust can.

How does wrapping tape around the outside of your exhaust increase flow? I'd like to hear the fluid/thermodynamics of that one.

The same way that putting a " kerker sticker " on your bike increases hp by 10 - 15 more ponies

exahust wrap is used in certain applications to keep heat in the exhaust, which keeps the density down & increases the exhaust velocity, therefore reducing backpressure.... at least, that's my basic understanding of it.

But yeah, basically it just looks cool & can keep your hamburger buns from getting over toasted.

    Wrap pipes ?

Wrapping the pipes will make it cooler on your legs and... other parts. It also raises the temps inside the pipes, which can increase the velocity of the exhaust gasses... I don't know if you'll notice any difference in performance, but you will be not roast as much.

Another slick alternative is to have the pipes Jet Hot coated. The tape gets nasty looking pretty quickly.

Well I rather burn the packing then burn my flesh !

I hear you can spray the wrap with a high temp paint that makes the wrap last longer.

Think I'm gonna try it. Its not cheap though...
    about $45 for a 50 foot roll.

heat reflective tape on the underside of the seat and in other inconspicuous places would be much cheaper and wouldn't burn up the exhaust packing.

just a piece of advice. Dont wrap titanium pipes. The excess heat could crack them.

In automotive applications it reduces the under hood temp significantly. That can be worth more hp than the exhaust vel increase if the intake draws from the engine compartment. Not really worth much on a short length of pipe or where no decrease in temp to the intake side is realised (aka bikes). Not to say it wouldn't keep your leg and ass cooler.

i wrapped the pipes on my 916 and didn't notice a whole lot difference, just barely enough for it to be worth doing IMO.

    Duey,

When you say didn't notice a whole lot of difference,
do you mean HP wise or heat up the ass wise?
    Just curious...

Any effort to reduce heat coming up out of the bike and directing it out the back to me is worth it as I commute alot with my bike to work.

    Wrap pipes ?

The pipe wrapping debate is almost like talking about what kind of oil to use.

It will probably help with the heat you feel on your legs.
It probably doesn't do much for HP.

Be carefuly though... like union said though.. wrapping titanium pipes they can crack.. even some aluminum ones may.

The new thing is to get them ceramic coated.

As far as the "ass dyno" feels not a damn thing different. Heat on the legs/ass was the only things to feel a slight difference. I mean my duc is already known to toast legs/ass's as it is, and my dumbass can't help but daily commute on it so yeah it made just enough difference for it to be worth doing. Still toasty anything that can help prevent that is good for me i figure.

Most auto parts stores which cater to "tuners" should have it.

    Autozone, VIP and the like.

    Re: Wrap pipes ?

I had the downpipe on my Lancer Evo jett hot coated a few years back (the blue 2000 degree type). The stuff was amazing. After driving around for a while, full boost off and on, I could get out and touch the downpipe after the car was off for a few minutes. Normally it would be almost glowing hot, and certainly not cool enough to handle for at least 30-40 minutes.

If you wanted to go all out you could have the pipes ceramic coated AND wrap them. Depending on the wrap and ceramic coating the two can work together. Just check with both manufacturers.

    Good stuff for sure!

    Re: Wrap pipes ?

Note, wrapping pipes also traps moisture against the pipe. Once you've wrapped your pipes for say, a year, you'll wanna keep them wrapped lest you realize how quickly they're corroding underneath...
