As far as masking shit off and doing different colors, fine. You can't achieve with paint what you can with digitally printed vinyl. Example:

Interesting. Everything I read says do not do that or you are practically guaranteed to get the winkle you saw, or bubbling. Says it is due to the enamel continuing to off-gas as it cures under the urethane top.

What primer did you use? Something designed for plastic?

I don't think that explains the wrinkling because I have painted many pieces now this way and only really had the wrinkle once. I think it's just prep. The primer that caused the wrinkle was supposedly paint ready armour bodies. I didn't bother to wet sand, and the paint wrinkled when I cleared. Otherwise I don't prim, as the 2X paint has the body of primer in it.

I'm about to paint 2 racebikes this way. I have the luxury of indoor painting this time, so I will wetsand between coats. Doesn't take much, but helps each coat sit flatter and go on easier.

A race bike is now a commercial vehicle?

Nope. I don't think it looks good on bikes.

    All dirt bikes are vinyl...

And ultimately who cares. You're just going to throw it down the track anyways.

If you've got 'sponsor' decals on it, it's literally a commercial.

Agreed, it's good enough for racing, but I don't consider it eye candy.

    Confirmation of Paul's BS:

Spraymax 2k over Rustoleum 2x enamel. Looks like cheapo primer too.
For plastic I'm thinking maybe spend a few more $ on proper plastic primer. Supposedly that helps with flex and adhesion.

    Hmph...

This is the direction I wound up going.. and I'm pretty pleased with the results so far. Not bad for the money.

I now want to do all the tins this way.

I have a couple cans of black and intend to pull some of the chromed trim bits off and give that a whirl as well.
