For what its worth I had the KLX 250 and put in a 351 kit in it. It did highway very comfortably, abundant torque. It was good on the trails too, though my dirt riding was/is elementary so I'm not a good judge there.
Actually, the 351 puts it in the ballpark.
They have big bore kits for the Yamaha as well, but most seem to agree it isn't worth it because they are expensive and nobody really knows what you are doing to the long term reliability of an extremely reliable motor with decent power stock(for what it is).
I love my WRR, but like the Kawi as well, despite not quite being in the same class. The WRRs seat height can be a bit daunting for some. It can be a pain sometimes for me despite a 34" inseam, but I also know of some people who are really short and manage fine. As mentioned, the aftermarket for the WRR is pretty amazing.

Have a line on a 2004 450 exc-f.
If I put some 50/50 tires on it would make a decent small Adv bike? Maybe be able to drive 1 night?
Any thoughts on this bike?

I just spent 3 days ripping backroads on an air-cooled XR250. It is surprisingly good at this. 6 speed gear box is everything for street stints. The bike is a dog, but this is actually a good thing for ADV type dual sporting. Powerful bikes are exhausting on rough roads. If you are racing or truly dirt riding, that's one thing. But trying to relax a bit with a touchy throttle is hard.
I've ridden an '08 450 EXC '-R'. It was very nice. One I rode was all dun-up for a dude my size-ish, which helps a lot. But the components were typical KTM; pretty swank. This was a carb'ed model. Power was good, throttle response was good. I've ridden the 350 and 500 EXCs.. both EFI. The carb'ed 450 felt like a nice split right between the two; not as absurd as the 500, not as sedate as the 350. The 350 felt more tossable, agile. Pretty much what you'd expect.
I know several riders that have or have had 450 EXCs and find them pretty easy to own.
I had either the 350 or 450 EXC in mind to replace my DRZ400S.
Geared right, yeah, that'd do okay as a dual-sport. The 450 EXC is still an enduro at the end of the day. Naturally, you can do anything with any bike. But the enduro's aren't really built to take gear, moto-camp, eat miles, etc. Are you sure you aren't after something more "ADV" like a KLR 650? Maybe a KTM 640/690?
I have an 07 450exc-f. While I love the bike for the trails, the seat makes any street rides pretty sucky. The motor has no issues... barely rotating at 60mph Not sure if 07 gear box is same as the 04?
You could change the seat, but most likely anything that makes it more comfy will also make it taller... which for me is an issue in the woods.
Sure. The only thing to really watch out for with that motor is the valve guides. The bottom end COULD be prone to some stress with the crank bearings, but odds are, as a dual sport, it’ll be fine because it’s not getting spun like a race motard.
Any bike of that vintage might nickel and dime you with simple shit, so it’s no better or worse in that regard.
Look at a seat concepts kit (as the cheapest and most available option) if you want to sit on it for any length of time. Seats escalate from there.
Rada on here bought a comfy seat for his KTM might want to ask him about it.

I used a drz400 for all stuff a little weighty for single tracks but does everything, I saw 97 top speed but
would cruise along traffic at 75 all day
Add a good seat, paper fuel filter, and the universal soldier
My KLX250s would do 81 on the highway
