He’s narrowed it down to 2-35 street bikes for his next purchase. Should be in the driveway late 2022.

    Fuckin' phones!

9000 miles, pretty much unmolested. FI, not-so-loud aftermarket exhaust, some weird security system I haven't figured out.

A little up in the air using National Powersports, but not a bad overall experience. I'll explain when I don't have to use a fuckin' phone!

Welcome to the world of being under whelmed by a big bore, heavy, low horse power bike and asking yourself why the fuck did they do that over and over. On the plus side after market support is huge and they are enjoyable to ride if you don't expect too much from them.

You will find the rear brake actually works in slowing the breast down! Maintenance is mostly oil filter and gas, makes noise but goes no where quickly. A comfy street ride. Things do tend to shake lose, Blue Loctite is a must! enjoy

Danas must be really different than the FL/touring bikes.

My FLHP goes just fine. Handles much better than I ever expected. (Admittedly I had low expectations.) I adore the motor and its power delivery. By far the best part of the bike. Squirts out of corners just fine. Huge flywheel; easy to ride smooth. Brakes are more than adequate.
I have no problems riding mine well over posted limits.

Hate the heat. Hate the SAE fasteners. Hate the fact that so many d-bags ride them.
Not a fan of the 3 different oil fills (crank, primary, trans), but we cope.

They are very different animals. The engines are different. The touring stuff gets the counter balanced crap while the dyna gets the unbalanced stuff and shakes like a Haley should. The frames and suspension are different. I believe the touring bikes have a solid mounted motor while the dynas have rubber mounted everything. Makes for a sloppier feeling bike on the dyna. The touring stuff generally gets dual disc brakes while the dyna has a brake. Ya the back brake works but I'm still all over the fronts.

The SAE stuff doesn't bother me if that was all they used. Mine has SAE, metric, torx, and allens. It's a bit ridiculous.

I do enjoy my dyna when I actually get it out. It's fun. A bit too loud for me but not terrible. I will agree the heat sucks. I guess that's what we get with a big air cooled engine.

Re: Ya'll Ain't Never Gonna Believe It

My bad. I didn't realize there were that many differences.
Definitely didn't know about the counter balancers.
Single disks? Never noticed that. WTF!

Modern touring motors are rubber mount. Front end is entirely metric (fasteners). Japanese forks, eyetalian brakes. Silly 10mm 12-point bolts for the calipers, etc. Everything downwind from the steering yoke seems to be SAE.. which is absurd in 2019.

My 'king is-in my view-just the right amount of loud. Sounds like a motorcycle. Problem is the sound is exactly the same as the loud ones. Although I do get compliments now and then that it is not "as loud as most Harleys".

I'm told a lot of the heat comes from the cat, which is right under your left thigh. There is a whole cottage industry of cutting them out and welding the pipes back up again. OE look, no cat, less heat. So they say. They also say you best flash/tune the thing and that it will be louder. The louder part keeps me away.
In summer traffic I really really really wish splitting were legal.

Re: Ya'll Ain't Never Gonna Believe It

Meh, I knew full well what I was getting myself into.

Those that know, know I've tried countless bikes the past few years of all genres I could get my hands on.

The most important factor in my decision is my physical limitations. Arthritis in my back & knees, especially my knees played a huge roll in my decision. A very distant second factor was passenger accommodations for Big Shirl although she initially said she no longer had an interest in being a passenger. So...

Sportbikes were out. Which sucks as this is really where my heart lies. I got a hardon for a couple VFR's that were recently posted here, but seat height & leg position played too much of a roll.

Dual sports were out simply because of the height and any 2-up riding that MAY happen wouldn't be much fun for a passenger. And those would be a bitch to do 200 mile road trips through the mountains on.

Adventure bikes, besides being far too tall for my liking, just do nothing for me. I couldn't force myself to like them. They're incredible machines, just not for me.

I turned my attention to something more cruiser oriented. The Japanese cruisers didn't really do much for me. I dunno why, but there just wasn't anything out there for me.

I turned my attention to a couple Victory models that really caught my eye. That all changed when I saw them in person. I immediately went from "I can see myself on that" to "nope, I can't". Great bikes though - rode well, decent power for what it is (same for handling). Plus the impending lack of factory support didn't sit well with me.

I reluctantly turned my sights to Harleys. Funny thing is, when I started looking I really couldn't see myself on much they had to offer. I've tried a few here & there as well, but nothing really lit me up. But as my search continued, I noticed most of the Harley searches I saved were Dyna Low Riders. Looked at a few up close & personal and got the "I can actually see myself on wunna those" tingle again. Managed to find one to take for a spin, and it was confirmed.

Again, I knew EXACTLY what I was getting myself into. I wanted something that I wouldn't get into trouble on, something that would be comfy for an all-day passenger when needed, LOW seat height, is a very basic machine, and something I wouldn't take a beating on if I decided to sell it in a couple years, and something I felt my body could handle at least for a couple years.

Found this one with low miles, a quieter aftermarket exhaust, and little to no mods. Price was right about where it should be - not a smoking deal, but not ridiculously overpriced like so many used ones are.

So, there it is. More to come about my experience with National Powersports after I get off the phone with them this morning.
