register as CUSTOM or a 1985 derrr!

So im building my chopper with a 1985 suzuki intruder as a donor bike for engine, wiring, contols, wheels, driveshaft, etc...

Fully homebuilt by me frame and forks and everything, tank, lights, seat...

i could either register it as a 2010 home built chopoper and go through all the hastle of documentation of everything, OR jus say its still a 1985 intruder, and pass inspection, done.

Insurance for both ways jus liability is 136$ vs 1870$ Both quotes for the full year. the 85 intruder sounds VERY appealing, but is it better come time to sell, or appraisal??

with all the extra $ you'd spent listing it as a 2010 custom chopper, do you think you would get that $$ back when selling it? if not, then i'd stick with the cheaper plan

I'm guessing you've looked at the RIDMV website and got all the info needed to register a homebuilt? Yeah, I'd register it as a 1985 intruder

^yea its nuts. Need a vin # to get insurance, but you need insurance before you can register it and get a vin!!!!!! NUTS!!! i was like, wtf>!

way easier to register as an 85 suzuki, HOWEVER, now i have to comply with original factory equipment like lights, exhaust, plate mount, etc.
Thats the part that sucks. If i got pulled over, i could have said, OFFICER, THIS IS ALL ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT THAT PERTAINS TO A REGISTERED STATE APPROVED 2010 sCHWAB sHOP cUSTOMS VL700t (t for turbo heh heh)

That won't help you as a 2010 anything needs just as much if not MORE state/federally mandated gear than an 1985 Suzuki, homebrew or not.

Dont they go by the vin on the frame and not the #'s on the motor.

cut the neck off the donor bike and weld it up to your frame and you will have your vin , a lot of older jap chops have gone this route.

    I'm no expert on this...

But I'm not sure if you could really call it an 85 suzuki since you're not using the frame, since that is where the VIN originates...?

I.e. when someone builds a 32 ford hot rod, they use the original frame and a new hotrod motor and call it a 32 ford IIRC

But when someone builds a hot rod using a chevy small block crate motor and one-offs the frame, they don't call it a 2006 chevy (or whenever the motor was made), they call it a 2010 custom.

This advice is HILARIOUS coming from the guy with a 10 year old junk streetbike worth 2000 bucks that he's showered in money, marchesini wheels, brembo master cylinders, and other top shelf race parts.

big difference between modding a street legal bike & custom building your own bike from a non-OEM frame. wheels, brakes, & misc upgrades wont change my registration from an 02 gsxr

i DID USE THE NECK off the old frame, however there wasnt much left of the vin. I have it written down, so i could always etch it back in

    Well here it is:
    OLD FRAME, and new frame....

Here is the rest of the 85 intruder:

Irrelevant. My dig was at you making a comment based on the inability to recoup money spent by doing something a certain way, when mods to a bike or any vehicle are good for a 90% loss on investment, especially when attached to an older or less valuable machine...

looks great! I can't wait to see it when it is done. sounds a lot easier and cheaper to register it as the 85. But if anything ever happens to it, then the insurance will pay you like it was an 85 intruder, so if it gets crashed then you will get like $700 for it.

    Just a thought.

Dont mess with the DMV..leave it as a 85 Intruder...Why did you have to destroy the numbers on the neck...kinda shot yourself in the foot there....

Thats freaking awesome, However The bottom where that point is in the frame sort of below the pegs seems if you ever hit a speed bump or road obstacle the bike would just stop. Or is it drawn lower to the ground for artisitic reasons
