You'll never use all that power

Ok, so we see "you'll never use the power" in the 1k vs 750 vs 600 vs everything threads.

Define what "using all that power" consists of. Everyone likes to mention this, but no one ever mentions what they mean by it and I'm a bit curious.

When was the last time you hit the rev limiter in 6th gear?

Depends on what you are doing with the bike. If you're talking about drag racing then sure you can.

Even on the new 600's, I don't think you'd ever use all the power in the bike riding the streets. It's retarded how people use that as an argument to keep someone from buying the bike that they want. A 600 can kill you just as easily as a 1000 can, because 60 mph is still 60 mph, regardless of the size of your motor. Fug'em, ride what you want how you want!

I agree, but how many times do you see the phrase, "I want a thousand cause I think Ill outgrow a 600" or something along those lines.

Re: You'll never use all that power

These bikes are made to rev to red line that's where the power is, and they are never run that high on the street and mosly not at a trackday either. Not reving 'em there is not using it. Pete Kates showed me some throttle position data once for him racing his 750, running 15's at loudon and the throttle was just about never fully open. Anyone that sits on a 600 and says it doesn't have enough power isn't riding it right.

Re: You'll never use all that power

It means you'll never do 300mph on the street.

Personally, I hate it when people say shit like "You'll never ride that bike to its full potential on the street"... YEAH... NO SHIT... Virtually NO one can ride ANY bike to its full potential on the street.. THAT'S NOT THE POINT!

The point is to friggin have fun & love your bike.

Me, I have a 1000cc Vtwin... and I roll that throttle to the stops at least once almost every time I put my leg over it. I may not let it rev all the way out to the limiter, but it's fun even down low.

This 1200 GSX-R based Bandit, trust me, around here, No. Va., on the street, I'll never hit the peak at 11,000 RPM. That ain't the point. Where this bike (and I suspect any bike that makes a hundred-plus horses on the street) isn't the top, it's down near the bottom. No rowing through the gears looking for some punch, efficient and speedy without winding out the engine, and smooth and buzz-free at 60-70-80. THAT is the attraction. Of course I'll never use it all (at least til next Spring when I head out west where the speed limits are "Reasonable and proper"). Meanwhile, I like the effortless power that comes from this bike a lot more than a less powerful bike that has to be spun to high RPM to yield even 1/2 the grunt of the big engine. And I figure I ain't alone in this thinking..

I would venture to say most of the I4s like being up near the top. Twins like it more down the bottom though. Or are you meaning more that 600s can do 60 in first and thousands can do 100 in first.

Because many people spend the extra 3gs for a larger bike, slip on etc.. and spend nothing on gear

Re: You'll never use all that power

So I think after reading comments, I can safely say I've used all the power my bike has. NO, not on the limiter in 6th. I wouldn't even attempt that with a 600. I rarely touch the limiter though, it's done making power at 12,500, not much of a need to go to 13,750 unless you want a face fulla windscreen and that burble sound.

Riding it to its full potential, great...now I gotta start a "riding your bike to its full potential" thread

Having used all the bikes power and scrubbing tires completely to the edges, I still know the bike will do more than I'll probably ever be able to do.

There are bikes out there with engines that don't need to be revved to the moon to get on the torque curve, bikes with halfway comfortable ergos. But those bikes don't win the 2009 ULTIMATE SUPERSPORT SHOOTOUT in the magazines, so nobody cares.

I didn't buy my ST3 for it's peak HP, I bought it for the torque spread.

Who the hell am I kidding, I bought it 'cause of the look and I've been justifying it however I can. Flame on! : )

Re: You'll never use all that power

For me that phrase (with regard to the 600v1000 thing) is more of a "save your money and get the 600, you'll never use the power/chassis/etc benefits from the 1000" kinda thing.

And as others have said, most people won't ever "need" the extra that a 1000 gives you, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't get what you want. As Pete so wisely said, most people can't use 100% of any bike, let alone something as capable and technologically advanced as a 600/1000 sport bike. Buy what you want so long as you can handle it.

I think with the 1000's it's more along the lines of you'll never "need" all that power.

    I went with a 1000 because I'm a real man.

Youre the butcher, no one will question you.

And I dont give a fuck what people ride, I just despise when people act like they're the shit regardless what bike they're on, and that happens moreso with 1000s.

I can say without a shadow of a doubt that you have not used all the power your bike has. Now if you were Ben Spies I would have a hard argument, but you are not so...

I guess I have always meant it as "full potential" when I say "all the power". I will change how I say things from now on. Thanks!

I guess I would rather KNOW I can ride a small displacement bike fast and use more of it's potential than ride a liter bike to 50% of it's potential. (on the track, on the street I am a pussy and I just putt around)
