    If you're thinking about a new R1...

or want an R1M, you may want look into the Yamaha PDP program.

I read this on the R1forum a week or so ago, and didn't think anything of it until my dealer called and asked for a larger deposit today. I'm only doing it to secure the color I want, I don't really care about the R1M. From what I've read, the R1M's are selling fast.

The Premiere Delivery Program (PDP) debuted today. Dealers received initial allotments of the R1M and standard R1 for early shipment of these models. These allotments are based on previous retail of the R1, so not all dealers will receive an allotment.

Under the program, a dealer can sell their allotted number of R1 and R1M models after taking a non-refundable, non-transferrable deposit from the customer, $1,500 for standard R1 and $2,500 for R1M. These PDP units will ship before normal (non-PDP) units. Normal units will be ordered in February and will be start delivery as late at May 2015. All PDP units will be shipped before April 30, 2015.

The PDP is only for "early" availability of the R1 and R1M. Your dealer will be able to order the standard R1 or R1M for you in February even if he does not have a PDP allotment. But, if the R1M sells out on PDP (500 available units), it will not be on the February "normal" order.

The PDP program ends on January 31, 2015. Color availability on the standard R1 is limited, so contact your dealer ASAP if you have or wish to place a deposit. Any unsold PDP allotments will be made available on the February order program.

Re: If you're thinking about a new R1...

I know there is a lot of hype on this bike but given the crossplanes piss poor resale or even its discount on new ones I can't see buying one of these at full retail. I would hate to buy one only to see it tumble in price like its predecessor.
I'm sure its going to be a good bike but I think the last gen really hurt the r1 image. And I have one too. Good bike but not great. and you can get them cheaper than a 600 brand new.

Re: If you're thinking about a new R1...

I don't buy sportbikes with resale being a deciding factor prior to purchase...my last new bike was an Italian, so that solidifies my point there.
I've also never paid full retail for anything with an engine, though I'm sure many are paying that.

IMHO with the 09-14 R1, the engine (I'm assuming you were talking about the engine, calling it the crossplane) isn't what hurt it's sales..or resale.

    1. The biggest thing that hurt them, is Yamaha upped production to keep up with initial demand, flooding the marking the same way Suzuki does with the GSXR. Unlike Suzuki, Yamaha didn't stop production for one year to sell off prior year models.

    2. It's porky, can't deny that.

    3. The huge underseat exhaust

Re: If you're thinking about a new R1...

Two years ago, after riding a friends 09 for a weekend, I was all set to buy one. A quick search and I was immediately disappointed with the above retail asking prices for used machines, and not just a few, most of them I found on several sites. So to hear the "piss poor resale" quote baffles me, a year ago this did not seem to be the case OR everyone wanted too much and that's why used didn't sell easy.
And I also ended up with an Italian bike brand new so I didn't care about resale either but I won't pay above retail and don't plan on it in the future.

Haven't read a single piece of literature about a bike made after 2000. What's an R1M? Is it like a Toyota Avalon where you pay 10k more and end up with a Camry with gold lettering?

Yamaha is just jumping on the HIGH Dollar bike band wagon (same as Ducati has for a while) and if it doesn't deliver this will sink the R1 image for good. All the hype isn't going to convince people its another lack luster 1K...

msrp on the crossplanes is about 13k. I can walk into several dealerships right now and pick one up for 10k or less otd brand new. they just don't sell well. used ones tend to go in the 7-8k range if your lucky. not a lot of people want these bikes so its hard to sell.
the dealerships you went to are nuts. hoping for fools to buy one.

I have to admit I'm pretty impressed with the on board electronics.

I'm impressed with the whole bike. Even though I love my hyper, I miss having a sportbike and if I were to buy another one, this would probably be what I'd go with.

Thats pretty bad ass. I hope all of these electronics are durable. And if there are issues, at least the dealer network and parts availability should be better than Aprilia.

I might have to go see one in person this spring.

Electronics wise, I never had an issue with my Aprilia...other than a TPS sensor recall. All my issues were mechanical/cosmetic.
I have 100% confidence in Yamaha resolving any issues that may come up, in a quick manner

I just gotta find someplace that'll do a decent trade on one, maybe two of my fleet and we'd be in business....

Considering it's the coldest and harshest winter in decades, I wonder who is going to want an R1 before May anyway.

Does anyone need a kidney? I have a spare one I was born with. Besides it's just extra weight to lug around when thrashing one of these on the track. The exhaust already sounds nasty stock so I can't imagine it with a pipe on it. This should be one hell of a machine on the track this spring.

I just watched an 11 minute ad from Yamaha for the R1M(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4VxBVmbsao) and I'm sold. I love how you can have custom suspension/engine setting presets. Like the ABC settings on a Suzuki only totally customizable. You can have a tailored setup for any condition and never have to turn a wrench or screw driver to make changes.

That sounds great in theory. I'm not really sure any racer will ever use that feature though. Every day is a new day, every track is a new track.

I think it would be good for the street. Ducati already offers that on almost all models, and it kicks ass.

Re: If you're thinking about a new R1...

    Congrats on the purchase!!!

On comparing to the previous gen... Can't even compare the 09-14 R1 to the new 2015 R1. They are light years apart. What hurt the 09-14 R1's resale/sales is that it wasn't a very good bike all things considered. It was top heavy and under-powered compared to the class leading competition. I rode the 2012 R1 around NOLA and it was a turd. I jumped straight off the production bone stock 2012 R1 and onto Hayes' Championship winning R1 and you would NEVER know they were the same bike. Huge difference. The one bright spot about the bike was that the crossplane crank, while down on power, was a rad powerplant. Has the grunt and sound of a twin but the top end of a inline.

The 2015 R1 however is INSANELY awesome. I haven't ridden it yet but Jen (JRO) rode it on Tuesday around Chuckwalla. Along with that a number of our buddies attended the Global Press Launch in Australia and they are RAVING about the bike. Game changer. Like GAAAAME CHAAAANGER.

    2015 R1 is a knockout. Kudos Yamaha.
