Where to get zinc dichromate plating done?

You know, the yellow finish that looks like this:

I've got a bunch of parts for my '69 El Camino that I'd like plated. I know of a great shop but they're out in California, and their minimum quantity is kinda high. I found South Shore Plating on the Googles but that's about all I can find in New England. And I've got no experience with them.

Sooo... does anyone know where I could get this done somewhat locally? If not I will ship my stuff out west.

My work has a lot of anodizing, QPQ, zinc, etc done at Southern Maine industries and SMSI. I think one is in Biddeford and the other is in Saco Maine. I can get a list of our plating suppliers, what they can plate, and possibly a batch cost for you. Pm me if you want a list slapped together.

Thanks Larry! I actually live in Portland but work in Mass.

    Thanks -- I've left them a message.

Southern Maine Industries do zinc coating (black, yellow, clear) for $1.60/lb and $0.31/part, but their minimum charge is really $55. So if you show up with one small bracket you don't pay $1.91, you pay $55. I'll probably go with them as they're local. FYI if the part is already zinc coated, you pay them 50% more (i.e. $82.50) to strip the plate and then re-zinc it.

They won't do personal projects, they only do industrial sized jobs. I already asked them about anodizing.

There is a company in Springfield VT that will do anodizing, and I assume zinc coating for personal projects. Here was the contact info I was given by GSP:

    Precision Valley Finishing
    Contact: Christy Gilchrist

Precision Valley don't do zinc anymore. He said VT made it too tough because of regulations.

Agreed. Though Southern Maine Industries seem very willing to do small jobs, albeit for their minimum charge. Let me know if you ever need me to do anything with them for you, I'm really in Portland most of the time.

Have you tried it personally? What makes the real stuff toxic is the dichromate. I know that Eastwood sell a paint that looks like dichromate, but it's fake. That's fine and all, but I'm actually after the durability of the real stuff. Plus I am terrible with a spray can :p

The can I have is the real deal. Probably not as durable as a dipped plating, but good enough.
