Boston to Southern Maine - Best Secondary Route?

    Hello:

I am looking for suggestions on some good secondary roads from Boston to Southern Maine. I'd like to avoid highways, so the time it takes to make the trip is not an issue. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Subscribing for the same. Often driving/riding from Boston to Bridgton.

    1A is off-season.

    Plenty of options here: http://www.newenglandriders.org/Best...st%20Roads.htm

Around York, ME. Don't really care too much about the time. Dunno, maybe 3 hours max? Seeing how it's only about an 1:20 minutes from Boston by highway, 3 hours should be more than enough time. Thanks! Also thanks, nhbubba for the link. Very helpful.

Best route from Boston to Maine includes RT. 2 in Vermont. Preferably both ways.

That may exceed your 3hr time limit.

If I just want to break up the highway monotony, I head up Rt 1 to 128 to Route 1A N through Newbury. Then in Newburyport you have to hop onto Rt 1 for the bridge. Then either go inland to something like Rt 108, or skip Salisbury, Seabrook and Hampton on Rt 1 (in summer, due to traffic) and take 111 E back to Rt 1A up through N Hampton, Rye and into Portsmouth. Don't know what the bridge construction sit. is in Portsmouth but once you get over the Piscataqua you have several choices.

You can also take an "inland route" through SNH by taking Rt 113 W from Newburyport over to Route 108 or one of the other N roads.
