What town and route were the police on? I hardly ever see police on my rides but I usually stick to rural town roads.

Well it seems our Governor Benson told the State Police to get off their ass, get out of their little cars and start writing violations.

I bet someone pissed him off on the road and this is his way of getting back.

He even quoted that the average state trooper writes like 780 violations in an average year. HE WANTS THAT DOUBLED!

"Even for things they normally wouldn't pull people over such as 1 mile an hour over 65 is the law in NH!!!!"

Where'd ya hear/read this? If it's true, he just lost my vote. The State Police are, for the most part, nothing more than radar tax collectors as it is. At least local town police can take pride in the fact that they are there first and foremost to keep the peace.

Benson backs proposal for more trooper traffic stops

NASHUA -- Gov. Craig Benson yesterday said he supports a state safety administrator's goal of encouraging police to pull over more drivers on the highways.

Assistant Safety Commissioner Earl M. Sweeney says he wants troopers to stop more cars for minor traffic violations, such as solid-line violations, or driving with a missing license plate, the New Hampshire Sunday News reported. The average trooper made roughly 840 stops last year, he said.

Well, that's a little easier to take.

Maybe they can target people who linger in the left lane...

still, doesn't mean they won't interpret that as a mandate to write more tickets... just to *prove* they're "making contact"...

No, that's them back peddling because of STRONG public reaction, as in we will remove you next voting session.

When it comes down to it, they are stopping everyone for everything.

HMMM... while they are back peddaling maybe we could trip them and make them raise all the speed limits. That would earn my vote. 85 on the highways would be reasonable (and none of those stupid 55 MPH zones just becuase there's a city nearby, it's STILL a highway) and 60 on the back roads would suit me just fine.

Regardless of how they are saying it, I don't see how this can amount to a good thing for us safe-if-not-exactly-legal-all-the-time drivers and riders.

What "Assistant Safety Commissioner Earl Sweeney" seems to fail to realize is that New Hampshire drivers have a consistent record of safety, despite roads which are certainly more dangerous (blind corners, sand, potholes, etc) than those in most states.

We are self-regulated, our local police forces are more than capable of handling the local towns, and our small number of interstate miles are safe and have no need for increased state traffic enforcement.

Really? I thought fatalities per mile travelled were much lower than U.S. average, especially considering you've got states thrown in there like Kansas where the only way you'll end up with a vehicle fatality is if you die of boredom from travelling on their miles of straight, never-ending roads

I was comparing to the best state. I see your point now though. When you consider the population density (as compared to, say Kansas), weather and twisty/hilly roads, we should be worse than average.
