    Colors in the Catskills II

    Coming October 2 - 4, 2009 in Hunter, NY
    By Michael Friedle #15249

Last year we built the dream and 2,500 people showed up. This year we will make it even bigger, better, higher and wider, while still retaining all the aspects that made this a unique event in the long history of the BMW MOA. It is not intended to be a second BMW MOA International Rally. It is one in a series of what should develop as BMW MOA Regional Events around the country. It is the biggest non-National event the BMW MOA has ever hosted.

The original premise of this event was to expose riders, and the general public, to the enthusiasm, expertise, and educational interests of the BMW MOA family. It was conceived as an "all brands" event featuring off road, sport, and touring riding opportunities. High quality motorcycle vendors were an important part of the mix, as was equally high quality evening entertainment. On site discounted lodging at the Kaatskill Hotel and Spa, as well as on slope condos, gave people a place to stay for the entire weekend. And of course the admission price was right.....free.

This event is brought to you by the BMW MOA and the Hunter Mountain Ski Area, in conjunction with MAX BMW, as a part of the Hunter Mountain Oktoberfest. Hunter does most of the "heavy lifting" in establishing the infrastructure for their existing Oktoberfest. The BMW MOA brings a "new flavor" and many new attendees to the table, and TEAM MAX conducts our off road riding schools numerous times each day.

The excellent local roads provide some real challenges for sport riding. We have laid out some self guided tours for some pretty interesting rides up, over, and around the Catskills. Your GPS can lead you to many more. A local mapmaking company will be present to sell you some truly detailed maps of the area to help get you back to Hunter if you decide to go exploring sans electronics. The valleys through the Catskills are filled with excellent twisty NY State highways leading to historic and scenic destinations for those wishing to do a little touring in the area. The Greene County Tourism Bureau will again be present with lots of brochures and helpful advice for things to see and do in the area.

Last year TEAM MAX filled every slot they offered for their FREE off road riding school. You provide the off road or dual sport bike, and they show you how to more fully utilize its potential. For those who qualified, the prize was a ride to the summit of Hunter Mountain, a 1600 foot vertical climb up some of the ski trails. There were lots of smiling faces around the TEAM MAX area all three days. The education theme also featured on road riding skills with a Lee Parks Total Control Advanced Riding Clinic offered by John Colandrea at the Capital Area Motorcycle School. This year we are exploring offering the MSF ERC, in addition to adding some extra on site educational seminars. We will also be presenting the very well received Police Motor Skills demonstration and discussion session. Our on site seminars range from GPS 101 to long distance riding to what to do when something goes badly wrong. One of the most enjoyable educational opportunities is simply walking around the parking lot, meeting new people and seeing all the new "farkles" on all the other bikes.

You can spend your day doing some riding in the area, or spend it browsing through the motorcycle vendors, such as Roadgear and Twisted Throttle, or just hanging out at the Oktoberfest enjoying beer and brats, then riding the chairlift to the summit for some hiking and leaf peeping time. There will be music all day Saturday and Sunday as part of the Oktoberfest. On Friday and Saturday evenings the BMW MOA will be presenting music in the base lodge lounge area after a long day of riding.

Hunter has once again offered sharply discounted on site room rates to our attendees for one night stays. An extra discount applies if you book a two night stay. To reserve space contact Renee Chirico at 518-263-5580x3021 or rchirico@huntermtn.com. For off site lodging choices please visit this site, http://www.greenetourism.com. This year we will also be offering on-site camping. Details are still being arranged, but check the BMW MOA website, the Forum, or http://www.huntermtn.com for current information.

This is just a small sampling of what awaits you at the Second Annual "Colors in the Catskills" event. Come join us for a day or the entire weekend. Bring all your friends along with you, the more the merrier. They don't have to be BMW riders; all brands of bikes are welcome to join in the fun. Stay on site, stay nearby, or this year you can even camp on site. Pre-registration is not necessary, it's not even offered. There is no Rally fee!

BMW MOA & Hunter Mtn Ski Resort > A fantastic Octoberfest event. The BMW MOA and MAX BMW, in conjunction with Hunter Mountain, is pleased to announce the second annual "COLORS IN THE CATSKILLS" event to take place at Hunter Mountain, NY the weekend of 2 - 4 October 2009. This event will be an all brand FREE gathering featuring off road riding, sport riding, sport touring riding and touring bike riding opportunities. Hunter Mountain has offered us the chance to ride right on their ski slopes in a series of off road riding demos and classes organized by Team MAX from MAX BMW. Here is a perfect opportunity to find out what that big GS, 650 GS, or any other dual purpose or off road bike can really do once the tires have left the tarmac. This part of the Catskills also has some pretty nice county maintained dirt roads to explore on your street legal dual-purpose bike. We will have route sheets available for individual or group trips off the beaten track. For more information contact Michael Friedle at mfriedle@verizon.net, and watch the BMW MOA Web site.

This was an awesome event last year! Tons of fun! The roads around Hunter are some of the best on the east coast!
