GARDNER -- On Saturday, Sept. 21, the Greater Gardner Suicide Prevention Task Force will host "The Ride of Your Life" to raise awareness as well as funds to support suicide prevention education for young people in the region.
Riders will depart from Gardner High School for a three-hour ride through eleven North Central Massachusetts communities before returning to the school for a other activities, including a barbecue lunch and health clinics, which include diabetes and blood pressure clinics, flu shots, suicide prevention training, and entertainment beginning at noon.
John Salovardos, director of pupil personnel services for the Gardner Public Schools and chairman of the Greater Gardner Task Force's youth subcommittee, said the prevention of youth suicide is of paramount concern. Just one year ago a health and risk behaviors survey of Massachusetts youth showed that 13 percent of students reported they seriously considered suicide, 7 percent reported making a suicide plan, and 2 percent reported making an attempt that resulted in injury that required medical attention.
Proceeds from the ride will be used to purchase Signs of Suicide (SOS) education, prevention and training materials that will be offered to schools throughout the region. The registration fees for the ride are $20 for riders and $15 for passengers. The barbecue and health clinics are open to the public and all are welcome. Non-riders who wish to attend the lunch and to take part in the barbecue at Gardner High School are also welcome at $10 per adult and $6 for children 12 and under.
There are no fees associated for those who wish to participate in the health clinics. Registration, pledge forms and waivers are available at www.ggsuicideprevention.org. The Greater Gardner Suicide Prevention Task Force was formed in 2012 and its members meet monthly at Heywood Hospital. For information, contact Salovardos at 978-630-4077.
