Is Rt. 2 in NW Mass any good?

I remember hearing from a friend a while back that Rt2 west of I91 was worth checking out. Anyone here who has ridden that route care to comment?

The 'Mohawk Trail' as it is called is a nice ride, for sure. Some nice twisties running along the river. Of course, it's a lot better when traffic is at a minimum. I've had pretty good luck in general with that.

Of course, there are lots of other good roads out in the Berkshires as well...

Is Rt. 2 in NW Mass any good?

Rt. 2 west from Greenfield to Shelburne Falls tends to be the most crowded with traffic. There are few places to pass and a lot of oncoming traffic.

Once you clear Shelburne Falls it's pretty clear sailing. Slow down in Charlemont for the occasional cop.

The best sections of Rt. 2 are from Florida to the summit. A nice series of high speed sweepers. If you get caught in traffic, pull over and let 'em pass. At the summit you can park and check it out.

The other good section is west of Williamstown, into NY state. Awesome roads with more incredible curves. Riding through North Adams is a pain though.

Yea, I've done it a bunch of times Real nice but if your stuck behind someone it isn't the same. I pull over, and will count out 30 seconds, if nobody is coming, I'll wait untill I see a car coming and start then. That should be more than enough lead time to get up w/out any traffic in front.

Thanks Wayne. Good to be here. I've been lurking for a while. I saw enough people here from the June 5 ride so I figured I better join in.

I gave it a whirl this afternoon. Not sure it was worth the 200 mile round trip to ride it, but the views from the mountain tops were certainly breathtaking.

I actually did some of it yesterday as well. I should have said that west of Charlemont is the good part. Traffic was especially bad yesterday.

Nothing went "wrong". Traffic was non-existent in some places, moderate in others. It's just that they're are plenty of roads equal to or better than that a lot closer to me than 100 miles away. Don't get me wrong, I had a fabulous time all day on the way down, on Rt 2, and on the way back. The weather was perfect and the scenery on the whole trip was great , I'm just not sure I'd tell people to ride 100 miles each way just to hit Rt. 2.

Well, I'd have to say that 100 miles each way is a bit much. But, if you can take good roads all the way there and back it would make for a nice 200 mile loop, no? From 2 you can hit 8A and 116 (to name just two roads) that are nice as well...

250 mile loop actually. Fortunately, I picked some great roads by chance heading down and back. I had a better time on the trip to and from Rt 2 than on the Mohawk trail itself. I'll be back down there again this summer to explore.
