so "dangerous" dan k and i were discussing how we could determine who deserved to graduate to real bikes and who is second best (and as such not *the* best) and must remain on 49cc scooters. the challenge: doing this in a way that doesn't suck...as in, not just trying to race on crappy scooters.

the solution: scooter derby.

full contact scooter race on a coned course in a parking lot. full race leathers and gear required. 49cc scooters only. if the RMV says it needs a registration, then it can't participate. it'll be like racing EX, except everyone is laughing with you instead of at you. high potential for awesome photos, creative passing techniques, and general enjoyment for participants and spectators alike. extremely low cost to get started and race, especially if you already have a suit.

look out for the gear boxes on the scooters left side, i leaned a little to hard one day and the metal on those gear boxes are very slippery. needless to say i still have some scares from that one!

Is this scooter only, or moped too? Are we going to have a legit 30MPH top speed it's out deal like the word of the RMV law, or all the single speed no clutch 49cc's that do in the 30's are fine? Where?

Should we have some kind of medic ready just in case for you guys. Scooter derby is can be hazardous to your health. I think I read somewhere that the newbie, Jackie or Sportygurl?, is a nurse/medic/dentist/?

apparently a mildly abused scooter can be had in the $500 range...should be within range for most people. plus you'll (probably) still have a scooter at the end of the day you can sell, burn, save for round 2, etc.

Actually my gf wants one. I was thinking of selling the 250 for one, only problem is I would never use one myself.

Save me the second best deal on a cheap beater, assuming you're taking the best. Hell with built, I don't think the bike is going to be a huge portion of the finish here... I expect physical technique and the ability to stay upright will be the main factors.

Not to say I'm against a weekend of tuning them ourselves, I just don't want to pay to get it that way

I was thinking or taking Kevins moped, that would leave the best scooter for you if it passes "tech" if not ill take one of my peds. last shot ill borrow a 49cc with a 150 stuffed it it (stock of course)

So hypothetically speaking, let’s say we had a location to do this on the South shore. How many of you are in for real? I’d be in, I’ll buy a scooter just for the event. Also, we need to hash out the rules details and work on a date if this is really going to happen. We do have a location in mind though, if there’s enough real interest.
