Where to go and to see

Time to plan this year's road trip. Tentative time frame first 2 weeks in August.

2012 was San Diego to Boston on my VFR, 14 days 5700 miles. Went north to Crater Lake, OR, then east to MN, south to the Dragon, home via BRP and Gettysburg.

2013 was from home out around Lake Michigan and back east through Sault Ste. Marie, to North Bay, ON, 6 days 3600 miles.

2014 was from home north through Quebec up to Matagami in the first people's lands and back home through Chicoutimi, QC and St. John, NB. again a week and about 3500 miles.

2013 and 2014 were ridden on my Honda F6B, which is ready for 2015.

    Basic thoughts:

    1. A day or two to get away, 2013 started with a SS1K to Michigan in 18 hours. Then 400 to 500 mile days off interstate touring and seeing the country.

    2. Avoiding big cities.

    3. No definite plan each day, stop late afternoon, assess remaining riding an lodging options and find a cheap place to stay for the night.

    4. Generally thinking either South or West.

    Wide open for suggestions!

    Very jealous!

How about: Wisconsin (Galena, Dubuque, etc.), Iowa (Soux City), then you can branch to either:

    - north west across the bad lands to Montana (Big Sky)
    - south west across colorado (ft collins, Denver, Colorado springs, durango, mesa verde etc.) to Salt Lake City

Either branch to end in Seattle / PNW.

I have been through Badlands in 2012 and it was terrific, not sure I have time to get all the way to Seattle and back, but the west has a real "space" appeal that I fell in love with.

You can spend days riding coastal Maine.

    The calculus of hate

It is not that I should win it is that you should lose
It is not that I succeed it is that you fail
It is not that I should live it is that you should die

I have acces to a condo in Bridgton, so I can ride through Maine in shorter two day trips without much planning.

Key West is always nice, but two weeks is a long time. And the roads down there, meh...

I took a business trip in 2012 that took me all over Wyoming working for the US Attorney's offices. I vowed to go back one day on a bike. I can highly recommend this often forgotten state.

VA through WV into TN. TN to the foot of the BRP. BRP to Skyline. Skyline through PA dutch farmland. PA through Catskills. Catskills to the edge of the berkshires.. plus some adirondacks thrown in for the helluvit. My odometer rolled 3400 miles. I was one happy mo'fo.

That man can pick a route!

Or just buy the Tom Tom app for $25 and get the same winding roads.

I did pretty much what you are talking about two months ago. It was amazing. I'll do it again, maybe this fall in fact.

South is fun. North is fun. West is fun.

If you are going in summer, north might be good. Head into Can ah dah and see what you can muster up for trouble.

Or, head down into West Virginia. Stay away from the tourist traps. Refuse to eat at chain restaurants. Talk to strangers. I'm sure you know seeing that you've done this before.

I'd love to have enough time to go down and ride the Gulf Coast.

I'm planning to ride to Yellow Stone next year. I really love Wyoming, spent a lot of time there, but never on a bike before.

    That's good advice right there.

About the only thing I miss about riding on the street is wandering. And stopping at random small towns and diners. And making plans by the side of the road.

I still do some of it it in my car. But when on a bike, the wanderlust felt more real. Nothing like being 2000 miles from home with nothing but what you got on your motorcycle. I remember riding through some random town in virginia, being stopped by a traffic jam, walking over to see what the commotion was about and finding out it was a July 4th parade and the name of the town happened to be Independence, VA. Poetic coincidences tend to happen more often while wandering on 2 wheels.

If I ever get back to street riding, this would be what brings me back. Very jealous OP.
