    24 Hours of Lemons

    http://www.24hoursoflemons.com/

Saw this today and thought someone might be interested. Looks like a riot to watch. Huge field of teams that are only allowed to spend $500 TOTAL on the car, the car included... and they get trophys for most laps completed and a peoples choice for more "interesting"

They're racing this weekend at NHMS.

    Re: 24 Hours of Lemons

And we will be racing on the track the following week.

Just experienced something like this in NJ with Miatas, and 3 series BMWs. I heard thru the grape vine that the car guys were wondering how we were going to deal with the huge oil spill all over the track... The Track let us onto the track w/out cleaning it up!!!!!!! luckily no one went down. I had to shut the track down. These were race prepped cars. I can't imagine what this is going to be like.

I'm planning on heading down to catch a bit of this tomorrow.

A friend of mine is racing in it, I think his team has an old BMW 3-series they prepped for it.

It's a blast. We ran a BMW the last few years and built a Mustang for this one. Can't wait to do it at NHMS.

As a heads up. I'd be very wary on the bikes on Monday the first few sessions.

They're not required to be tight on anything. If there is excessive fluid leaks, they may get black flagged.

    Re: 24 Hours of Lemons

Just a forewarning. an old Porsche blew it's motor and dropped "a ton" of oil on the track. it was described as "a massive spill" and the race was black flagged while they cleaned it up. The spill was between turns 9 & 10.

sorry to be the bearer of bad news...

No but it's really not polite to have a race where vehicles held together with zip-ties and duct tape aren't just tolerated, they're encouraged.

They leak enough oil to make BP cringe, and they spill more coolant than a Prestone employee with Parkinsons,

Not to mention they leave more trash behind from all the crap that falls off of their cars.

That being said though, it is still a fun sport to watch.

no the track shouldn't be exclusive but they shouldn't be allowed to run cars that leak and potentially ruin the track for motorcyclists

Ok, so 3 motors let go today. Lots of of oil pretty much everywhere.

You want a clean perfect race track that no one ever wrecked on; buy it and build it yourself.

Oil dri works wonders; not like a motorcycle never slicked down a track!

You should really get off your horse. A motorcycle could just as easily oil down the track. It happened last year at Monti. Read the rules, they are strict when it comes to any leaks and water only for coolant.

    Re: 24 Hours of Lemons

I am familiar that bike can leak. Someones R6 drain bolt fell out last year but to me a car can drop a LOT more oil then a bike. The issue here is I'm a mechanic and it saddens me that they put cars the KNOW are going to blow up out on the track.

I get the concept and its funny . . . . until they screw up the track quite a bit, 2 days to clean it or not its still going to worry me. I deal with oil every day and it never really comes off completely

Since you're a mechanic, you're familiar with the fact that any motor can blow up right?

Their track. Their rules. Don't like it; play elsewhere.

Loudon was rebuilt for the explicit running of NASCAR. Sorry to say. First series was Indycar but it was always the thought to bring NASCAR to NH. It's the largest sporting event in NH.. both in attendence and bringing in money.
I love motorcycle racing as much or more than the next guy, but a track is run for maximum income. I can't even imagine the tax bill there. One day I hope they build an exclusive MC track BUT that's not financially feasible.

Yup. Motors let go in T9-T10, T1 and the Bowl. the officials have been very good about cleaning though. In the drivers meeting this morning they reminded teams that if the motors starts sounding bad they should pull in and not risk messing the track.

The difference being that NASCAR teams aren't weekend warrior yahoos with a wal-mart fanny pack 'o' tools who think they are the next breakthrough team in formula one.

Yes, bike motors let go. I haven't seen 3 let go in one day before and rarely do they spill their guts everywhere when they do.

In my opinion (and it's my opinion so please don't tell me I'm not entitled to it) it's a little irresponsible to have a 24 hour race with cars that are restricted to such a tight budget.

Having said that, I'll deal with the oil spills and speedy-dri. Wouldn't be the first time, wont be the last.

The "let them drop" comment was in poor taste I think. No?
