    Mt Washington

So every year for the past few years I've made it up washington at least once, sometimes more.

I havn't had the chance to do it at all this year. So next weekend weather dependent I'm looking to do it. I usually do Tuckermans Ravine, but this time I want to try a new trail that is considerably harder. The Great Gulf Trail.

    http://hikethewhites.com/greatgulf.html

"The Great Gulf trail runs from the parking area on Rt 16 up the gulf, past Spaulding Lake, up the 1600' headwall, to the summit of Washington."

Thats about 1600 ft elevation gain in about a quarter of a mile, so its pretty steep. Usually you need to take 2 cars and park one over a Pinkham's notch because they dont recommend climbing down the Great Gulf Trail (plus its 8 miles compared to Tuckermans 4 miles). But we could also do it with just one car and park at Pinkham and hike up to the auto road and catch the trail from there.

Either way weather dependent it should be fun...but about a 12 miles hike. So gotta be in decent shape. This trail is suppose to have the best views in the White Mountains and is typically less crowded thean the popular ones.

    anyone interested?

Huntington Ravine is another great shorter option, it breaks off from the Tuck's trail fairly early. When you get to the headwall you look up and think "there's no way a trail can go up there". Don't do it when it's wet.

    Not that I can go....

    Re: Mt Washington

yea more people have died on Huntingtons i think than anywhere else on the mountain. I've always wanted to do this trail so we shall see.

Its all weather dependent. Last year at the summit when I did it it was clear and 85 degrees. The next day it wasnt at all. So as the week draws to a close I will have a better idea of the weather conditions. It will determine what I have to pack (clothing wise) and 12 miles is a long way, and you have to carry enough water as well so...

I've done a lot of winter climbing and hiking but that was 25-30 years ago.. I am not so excited about it now.

    Re: Mt Washington

I did the Mt. Tom and Mt. Field loop this past weekend. The weather, or should I say the humidity was grotesque! Over 3000' it was like walking in the amazon jungle the air was so thick. Lesson learned save the 4000 footers for the cooler/drier weather.

Have fun on your hike down Tucks!
