Eh... she's a 62 year old alcoholic. She probably has a very slow, painful death coming her way, I just hope it happens in prison.

IMO, it's not just DUI laws that need to be more strict... but I'll save that for another topic.

Thoughts and prayers go out to Terry, Diana and their family.

it is amazing what you can get away with behind the wheel. I read often of people killing cyclists, motorcyclists, injuring people, changing lives for the worst and they get a FINE. It is bullshit. Im sorry, if there is injury or death resulting from their actions, the penalty must be higher.

I hope that these folks have the strength and grace to keep going and have a good life, and that this driver pays for her actions one way or another.

    This is crazy man...

I was riding on the Milton/Westford road after work towards fairfax.

I saw a bike pulled off to the side of the road and a guy walking back down toward it. Harley guy... I was stuck in traffic (some farm equipment or tractor or something holding everybody up) but motioned to him the thumbs up asking "everything okay?" He just kept walking back towards his bike.

A couple yards down the road - I see another guy pop up out of the woods with his head all bloodied, looking further down in the ditch I see a bike...

I couldn't turn around right then, since I was in a line of cars, but as soon as there was a pull off - I noticed two other cars had already pulled off and turned around. There was somebody else talking to the guy, and he was walking around okay. So I motioned again, and then took off.

Tough couple days in northern VT.

    Be safe out there guys.

Terry and Diana's daughter Tina asked that this be passed along. The surgery was today, and I'm sure many of you still had Terry and Diana in your thoughts and prayers. I will post an update on how the surgery went as soon as I Tina posts back up.
thank you on Terry and Dianas behalf. I am their daughter and both are improving a little bit each day. My Mom and Dad both have surgeries scheduled for tomorrow so please send out extra prayers for them because I know they are helping them both. It is appreciated beyond words .
This was in another news article...

Police noticed multiple prescription pill bottles in what appeared to be a handbag in Lucier’s car.
Metayer said he asked Lucier if she had taken medications on that day, to which she alleged said she had, “a lot.”..........Trooper Metayer’s affidavit claimed that Lucier “spontaneously” stated, “‘I don’t drink much, but I did today.’”
Lucier was lodged at Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans Town on $25,000.
The affidavit from Metayer also stated, “It should be noted that while at the barracks I was advised by Trooper Lozier [who had also responded to the crash scene] that he had observed a gallon size container of vodka in the passenger side front seat of the defendant’s vehicle.”
He also stated that Lucier had allegedly stated to staff at NMC that she been traveling to St. Albans for a court hearing regarding the two previous DUI arrests...................For the May 30 incident, Lucier gave a blood sample at Northwestern Medical Center. That reading gave a BAC of 0.815 percent, according to a court affidavit.
That scares the crap out of me.... She had .240 on the day she hit Terry and Diana and just prior had been pulled over with a BAC of .815??? are you serious?!?!

Wow guys. Thoughts and prayers for Terry and Diane. This is tragic. I'm hoping people are careful and riding full gear, full time. I've only been a resident down here for a week, and already I've seen a handful of crazy surgical traumas related to bikes. I'm on call this weekend as well.

Mark, to answer your question: Like any addiction, the enzymes that break down alcohol (or any drug that is abused) are highly up-regulated through a positive feedback loop (for alcohol they are acetaldehyde dehydrogenase and alcohol dehydrogenase). In this woman's case, she likely had an ability to metabolize and store EtOH at an unprecedented level. I've only been in medicine 4.5 years now, but I've never seen a BAC of 810 (or 0.81). That type of level is rarely compatible with life.

This is tragic. I hope to see all of you guys again soon. I'll be in VT for a weekend in September for a wedding. Until then, keep Terry, Diane and all injured riders in your thoughts (as I will), and have a VERY safe and fun 4th of July, especially if you hop on the two-wheels.

    Another update from Tina:

both surgeries went well......my dad is expected to be awake today and they are taking the breathing tube out so today I get to TALK with my Dad! )) I cant wait! My Mom had a bit of a rough patch but yesterday she was more herself and I am confident in her improvement. They have a long road ahead in being able to come home and in making home accesible to them but we will get there.........one step at a time. They are both here and that is all that matters right now. Thank you so much for your thoughts, and your prayers.
    Definitely good news!
