    Hey from Stowe

I've been lurking for a few weeks and wanted to register and introduce myself. I live in Stowe and own an inn with my wife. I just started riding a little over a year ago quickly moving from a 150cc scooter to a Ducati GT1000. Still have the scooter and love riding it around Stowe but the Duc has become my passion. Definitely still a newbie, but I have put about 5K on the Duc and consider myself a decent rider for someone with such little experience. I hope to make it to at least one bike night this summer.

Quick question about Route 17, which I've been on in the car, though it's been a few years, haven't ridden it yet. Is it a better ride in one direction than the other. I enjoy riding the Notch from Stowe to Jeff, the tightest curves going uphill, the trip back I'll usually take another route.

Thanks for any help, it is very much appreciated.

    Randy

    Hey welcome!
That sure is a big leap from a 150 scooter to the GT Duc hahaha. Can't help you with route 17.

Do both and make up your own mind!

Where is your Inn? Maybe we can get the bike night crew to ride down!

    welcome to the site Ranette,

Stowe huh? I bet you're a skier or boarder? Been skiing since i was a wee-tike, i'll have to come up and stay at your B&B this winter.

EDIT: or come up for a bike night if one arises.

Thanks for the welcome. Actually, though I'm certainly not advocating the GT1000 as a beginner bike, the leap wasn't as huge as you'd assume. It's a 92HP twin. The power band is very, very predictable. It will certainly move, and I've probably only explored about 5% of it's capabilities, but there are no surprises. Probably not too, too different from something like an SV650. Don't want to make this a thread about my bike being beginner appropriate or not, I've been through that on other boards. I understand that I went against conventional wisdom, but so far it's worked out well for me.

I see that you are a rider coach. Where? Because of our crazy schedule I couldn't take a class in VT. I took the BRC and ERC in NY. Next year I hope to take the Lee Parks class that is given outside of Albany.

We own The Gables right on Mountain Road. Great place to meet up for breakfast before a ride.

No worries about the big bike. You seem like a mature enough guy and having taken the BRC and ERC speaks volumes.

I teach in Burlington at the Air Guard base.

I am trying to get that "Lee Parks class" guy to teach one over here. (He is on the forum and a great guy)

All the same places , just keeping it very low- key and flying under the radar.

    Re: Hey from Stowe

Welcome Ranette...another VT'er and in a central location, slick. New breakfast / meet up spot for rides, I like it.

I'd take it really easy on 17 at first, bad things can happen real fast by people misjudging the turns. As for direction, head up and over from Waitsfield side and then turn around at RT 17 / 116 intersection and head back over and see what you think. I myself really don't have a preference.

    You're in a decent location though. 100, 108, 109...

Just take it slow. Myself, F4IGuy, and Slyder27 rock 17 alot, and we would be more than happy to help you get up and down the mountain safely.

Welcome. I found these videos a while back, should give you an idea of what to expect.

    http://motorcycle-vermont.com/videos.../#comment_list
(this direction, the turn at 2:18 is by far the best, and at 4:13, but that one coming the other direction gets me all wet every single time).

Another vid, this one done on a tard.
    http://motorcycle-vermont.com/videos...m-dartmouth01/
The turn at 4:13 from above is done at 2:38 on this one...God I love that turn.

Btw, both directions offer good stretches.

From Sugarbush to Bristol way, I love the middle (by Mad River ski entrance) and upward from there.

From Bristol to Sugarbush way....the beginning is really nice and that Turn by the picnic tables is way cool.

That's where I found myself last Sunday, definitely a nice leisurely ride. Another road that I really like is 100c from Hyde Park to Johnson. Only a few miles long, some nice sweeping turns but nothing serious; the thing I love about it so much is the road surface. It is absolutely pristine, like skiing 8" of fresh powder on top of a groomed base. Don't know when it was last paved but they really did a great job.

By the way everybody, thanks for the warm welcome. Even you Tim.

welcome to the group. I've been inside your Inn before and its very nice. My mother re-did a few rooms for the owners (maybe it was you) a few years back and I was helping her.

If it hasn't already been said, you'll need to make it up to burlington on a tuesday night to bike night. there's a crew that rolls out of hardwick that you could jump in with when they come through stowe as well.
