Hopefully not too far OT, but this post made me think of this thread I read on Adv rider the other day:

2 Texans Ride the TAT... heading to San Francisco, CA

Looks like a helluva good time. All that BLM space, stuff like that. So awesome. Every once and a while I get real jealous of that riding ya'll have.

Damn! Those x-rays of the big snap look painful. At least your sweet Tiger will be ready to go as soon as you are.

    Mark,

It seems you have quite the Tucson connection. If and when you make it out here you won't have to worry about finding a place to stay.

You're going to be able to ride way before you should ride. Those big bones take a while to fully heal and it would be really bad to get into another accident before healing is complete. I'm in the same boat with my shoulder and elbow.

    Take care.

Update: Banner day today. I'm off Keith's couch and back at work, where I've spent most of the day telling my story to each person stopping by my office in succession (and have gotten some real entertainment showing them my x-rays). And at lunch I made an offer on the house I want to buy!

Re: Not another random crash thread, this time it is one of our own

Stopped by my apartment today and found the helmet and boots I'd been wearing at the time of the crash. Behold.

Hard hit to the back of the head:

Strange random hit to the side of the head:

Internal padding is compressed in the back of the helmet:

Something tore a hole in the side of my right boot big enough for the toe cap to protrude:

Scuffing on the outside of both boots, well up past the ankle:

The helmet is a Shark RSI, and the boots are Matterhorn Model 102494.

There is no doubt in my mind that the Shark saved me from a severe head injury or possibly death. I'm not at all convinced that most other helmets would have done as good a job protecting my head -- the Shark is DOT and ECE 22.05 approved, a combination that many argue results in lower G-forces transmitted to the brain than a Snell rating (Motorcyclist magazine did a long, detailed report on helmet standards and testing a few years back; if you haven't read it, you should).

It also seems pretty obvious that if I'd been wearing sneakers, my feet would be mangled. It took a lot of force to tear open the toe box of the right boot, and all the scuffing on the outsides of both boots would have equalled serious road rash and possibly major ankle injuries without that thick layer of leather in the way. On longer rides I wear motorcycle-specific boots, but for going to work I wear the Matterhorns because they make more sense to wear around the office all day long.

My jacket is rashed in a number of places as well, but it's a Fox Creek Leather jacket made of extremely thick naked leather. As such, there's no damage to speak of, and the scuffing will be invisible after the next time I condition the jacket with leather dressing.

End result: I sustained no road rash whatsoever anywhere on my body. Only injuries I sustained were the broken femur, a lot of bruises, and some very minor bleeding on the brain caused by the sudden deceleration of my head.

ATGATT, boys and girls! Even if you're just riding three miles home from work.

Basically back to normal at this point. The only lingering effect is some nerve shit going on in my toes (on both feet) -- some tingling, but nothing major. It has no significant effect on me, it's just occasionally a little annoying.

Been riding a lot, much to my mom's disappointment.

Public thanks to everyone who helped me through this! You guys rock.

That little info packet thing on the back of your helmet looks like a good idea. Where'd you pick that up?

Don't get your hopes up, I had to show them where and what it was, 2 days after the crash. We had to call his parents at 11pm to tell them to call the hospital because they wouldn't tell me anything and wouldn't call anybody since they didn't have his consent (since he wasn't conscious). I've lost all faith in that little packet

If he signed it giving consent there wouldn't have been a problem, of course he would also need to have his signature notarized to be legal. Of course that would only pertain to "First responders" and anyone responsible for direct care to the patient.

The patient confidentiality laws are a pain in the Ass.

Well, I think they are a ton better than putting that in your 'phone'...it's a far site better than nothing.

One problem...the should be mounted on the left SIDE near the chin strap 'buckle' so that they are sure to see it when they go to remove your helmet.

    Mark,

I'm glad to hear you are doing so well. It's good to know you are up and back on the bike. Thanks for posting the pics of your gear and sharing your story with us. Now I just have to figure out how to share this with my wife. She just started riding her new CBR250R this year and I found out the other day she decided to venture out with no protective gear except her helmet. Don't want to scare her away from bikes, though!

No doubt they are better than nothing and I still think they are a good idea, just realize that it may be missed by everybody. I want one that has a hi-viz pouch as opposed to the black, because I think that was part of the problem with them not seeing Mark's.
