    Trip's over in Maine

Well kids, my Trans-Lab 2010 trip has come to its end about 400 miles shy of home. Crashed yesterday outside of Bar Harbor; broke right wrist and left hand. Bike's okay aside from broken clutch lever, which Jason is currently trying to get welded. Don't think I can ride 400 miles in these casts though. Still trying to figure out what to do. Maybe rent a U-Haul.

Funny thing is, the wrist and hand don't even really hurt, they're just weak, and the casts get in the way of everything. Dammit.

Shit! Sorry to hear Mark. At least you made sure that you won't forget this trip haha. Heal up quick!

Edit: I'm guessing this means the October trip is off?

You could have a relay to get you home! You would be playing the part of the baton.

I just left the Bar Harbor area yesterday morning. Had my trailer with me as well. Wish I had internet access at the camp and saw this.

Are you chitting me? 700 miles of unforgiving gravel and you crash in Bah Habah?

So sorry man. I would like to meet with you sometime this winter. 4 or 5 of us are planning this trip next year! (Maybe we'll try and skip Bah Habah...)

    Re: Trip's over in Maine

Just talked to Mark. He is in the u-haul, enroute home to VT. He broke a metacarpal in one hand, the end of the radius in the other, and a finger. IIRC, he said he has a pin in the finger (which will come out) and a permanent Ti plate in the wrist with the broken radius. Casts on both hands, but one is removable. Expected recovery time 6-8 weeks. He sounds understandably annoyed at having both hands tied up with the casts, but other than that in good spirits. He was excited to post his x-rays.

Did he say what happened? I assume coal dust was not to blame for this one

On the way home via U-Haul. Thanks for all the offers of help.

Having a cast on each hand really sucks.

    Re: Trip's over in Maine

Home now. My apartment was torn apart because a leaky faucet on the neighbor's side flowed under the wall and soaked my bedroom carpet. So while I was gone, the landlord's work crew came in and cleared out my bedroom... and didn't put it back the way it was. So I had to have some friends rearrange the apartment for me so I can actually go to sleep tonight. FML.

Tell me about it. I'm pissed at myself for making such a stupid mistake.

Ouch, that sucks. I've dealt with one broken wrist before...casts on both hands must really suck, but you already know that.

Best of luck healing quickly, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like to hear about the trip when you've got time.

    Re: Trip's over in Maine

All right, boys and girls. Gather around and cringe.

Left hand. They just splinted this one because the bone will heal fine on its own.

Right wrist. Part of the socket formed by the end of the radius broke off, allowing the whole joint to dislocate. Looked gnarly when I took my jacket off.

They installed a plate to shore up the joint.

And a pin to fix the fifth metacarpal, which was busted at the proximal end. The pin will be removed eventually; the plate stays in.

Wow Mark, this is terrible news! Although it could have been much worse, and I guess the silver lining is that this happened near the end of the prime riding season.

Now, the question everyone is asking: how?
