So, I'll be home for the first two weeks of December....thinking of getting my spare set of dirt tires studded. Brett, you gonna be around so we can get this off the ground as well?

    Cheers!

I don't think there will be any place to use the studs that early. Late January, yes.

What are you guys doing about studding the tires? Because I need to stud a new rear tire for my Honda.

I wasn't planning on ice riding just yet, but I was thinking of getting them studded while east for a short period. Plus I get to go to bike night. Mark, I think Doc knows where to get 'em studded. I know Kurlon knows. Perhaps buying a stud kit and I could do it myself. I'll let you know what I find out.

    cheers.

    Re: VT Pitbike racing

What sort of studs are you going to use? Because actual studs require a stud gun for insertion, which is the part that's hanging me up because stud guns are fucking expensive, and no one seems to have them available for rent.

You could just use ice screws, but the problem with those is that they pull out easily, especially if you use them on snowy trails instead of just on a frozen lake. (They don't work at all for me because they can't go on pavement.)

Roadside only has the ice screws, FWIW. But if you guys want to use actual studs, we can order a box to split between us. We just need to figure out where to borrow/rent a stud gun from.

well, like you said, studs would be the best option, but pricier.

i would think the screws would be ok for our application, since we have low hp. but im inexperienced with this, maybe we would end up ripping out a lot of them?

It depends entirely on where you're planning to ride. If you're only going to be riding on ice, no frozen/snowy trails, the screws will be fine. If you want to get off frozen bodies of water, studs would be better because you will tear screws out on rocks/logs/etc.

    Re: VT Pitbike racing

By the way, rumor has it that the police has been ticketing people out at the Sandbar and other places on Lake Champlain for driving/riding unplated vehicles on the ice because bodies of water are considered to be state highways or something. So technically, you need a dual-sport to ride on the ice. Apparently this even extends to smaller lakes and ponds, though obviously if you're riding on a pond on private property, there won't be any police around to see you, and even if there were they probably have better things to do.

Point being, be careful if you're planning to ride on Lake Champlain, especially at any of the popular spots. Might be worth finding a pond to ride on -- besides which, a pond will freeze a whole lot earlier than the lake.

I screwed my tires by hand. The guys around here trail rode all the time on 70s with just screwed tires, no issues. The OEM / cheapie knobies work well as the knobs are big and the rubber is hard.

I might be interested once I buy all the stuff I need to buy for the trip in May. It really depends on how many little things come up over the winter.

$500 from KB was a great deal.

    Let me know.

It had a tune up (oil, carb cleaned, new jet, rear master rebuilt) and KB says it comes with dirty tires. It also has an upgraded rear ishock. Runs great and it has more corner clearance than my CRF based motard.

I was thinking I might drop this motor into my CRF but a quick turn around sale would work good for me.

If I have to hold onto this thing until spring I am gonna use it as a rental and put it on Craiglist with a higher price.

Adjust the valves, and if it still doesn't perk up remind me to bring a compression tester the next time I'm around, that 110 should walk all over the Thumpy 120, even if geared to match it's top speed in 4th when it's in tune. I suspect it may just be due for a top end. $100 for a 52mm piston and cylinder to match it assuming it's REALLY worn out.
