I'm thinking it might be easier to find a dirt track to use, especially if we limit it to an invite-only VTBN/NESR group. For example, a friend of mine has been building some trails on his property; maybe he'd be willing to let us set up a trail that could double as a track.

If we could find one or two other locations as well, we could probably manage to have two or three sessions a month and actually get our money's worth from the bikes we've bought/built.

And we could always have informal impromptu gatherings in certain parking lots -- not races, but "practice" sessions, just like someone might go practice driving in an empty parking lot. If we limit this to the core group, we ought to be able to avoid attracting attention.

Sounds good Mark. I am not "arguing" with you. My only thing with the above is the limiting part. More people equals more fun and sustainability...

Also you can find a pitbike for $500.

Agreed -- but obviously as we get to know people, we can invite them to the more limited events. Call them private practice sessions or something.

Also you can find a pitbike for $500.
True, the smaller ones anyway. The TTR125s and XR100s seem to be going for closer to $800, plus some money for tires (and maybe an extra wheelset if we do both paved and dirt tracks) and maybe a little suspension work...

I am keeping an eye on Craigslist though, just in case a great deal shows up.

That's one hell of a good deal, did it come in race tires too!
If you get this going, I would love to come play also. Probably play catch up to Bergs jogging stock bike.

The XR's and TTR's running the larger tires can run just as good around the track as the 12" tire machines. The problem with th XR and TTR is to get them with 17" rims so you can get good race rubber on them can be expensive. You can find some decent rubber choices for the stock size rims to get you going while you you for a used set of rims to show up

For starting out, cheapie Chenshin trials or scooter tires on stock rims will get you on the track and dicing. Don't worry about 12" wide rim conversions/etc right off the bat.

I can't justify $50/weekend + trailering but if there was a field or parking lot we could "rent" in the Burlington area, I'd buy a bike in a heartbeat.

    2 ideas:

    1. Find a company, or place of work... call it motorcycle "awareness" training, or something, explain it's on mini bikes, and have at it... the second you say practice or racing, say goodbye to permissions. This has worked for my nephew.

    2. Make a mini flat track or sumo track at my house... substitue asphalt for hard packed clay (the terrain I have). I forget what it's called, but this is pretty popular (dirt road courses essentially, with a couple easy floating jumps).

I still need to try it. I just can't see how 17's work on that lil track. Post those pics again.

    1. I think I might be able to do... Fanny Allen Parking lot.

    2. I will make the trip to Vergennes for that.

    FYI. Ice racing is FREE.

That'd be pretty cool, though I still have to conundrum of how to get a pit bike around if I can afford one.

Except for the cost of an extra set of tires (and possibly rims) and studs, right?

I have a Truck and can fit like 6 pitbikes in the back...

Yes... I forgot. Not everyone has the studded tires already :

Ok so Fanny Allen parking lot... When are you guys good to go and I will schedule it. I won't book it unless I have at least 4 riders with bikes.

How often can you "book it"? I'm only going to get a bike if this is going to be a regularly scheduled thing.

What happened to your 36 acres in Vergennes?

Or is the house not built yet?

PS: We may have an option for setting up a dirt track on a friend of mine's property in Essex as well.

Cags can be fun but the elevation changes at rocky ridge are tough on them unless you weight 60lbs.
And no, your bolt on cag mods will not help much, maybe get you from 30 to 33mph if your lucky, gearing changes will be the most help generally. If you like the idea of a pocket bike and want to faster just buy a used Euro, can be had under $1000 and they are fucking fast!
