    '00 SV650 Slipper Clutch ?'s

    G'evening,
I was curious if any of you were running a slipper clutch on your SV at NHMS. Is it worth it or should I just suck it up and learn to be more skilled with my downshifts?

I guess having a slipper clutch on my streetbike has me a bit lazy on the track.

    Thanks,
    Fitz

    Re: '00 SV650 Slipper Clutch ?'s

I've never tried one but my SV's clutch is stock and it doesn't give me much of a problem. That said I run stock gearing and don't have to shift all that much as my skil level.

I figured I woudl reply as I did have a slipper clutch for a while and didn't like it. Mine slipped in both directions though and was casued by me stupidly putting some Castrol 10W40 in... with "sludge protection". That made it REALLY easy to mess up with giving it too much gas and spinning the tire even at near full lean. Doh! When I replaced the clutch pack the old one looked like new aft 5k miles and it was just that damn stuff that made it slip. It is fine now and runs just liek it once did.

Are slipper clutches getting more common on sport bikes now? Or is it on exotic or near exotic machines?

    Re: '00 SV650 Slipper Clutch ?'s

I've got no problems running a stock clutch on my SV and I don't know many other racers that have them either... especially since it makes us illegal for Lightweight Super Sport.

First step to smoother downshifts is to not grab a fist full of lever when you pull in the clutch. Bring it into the friction point & let your fingers be the slipper.

Slippers certainly make things easier if you don't have a smooth technique though, that's for sure.

My K6 600 has a slipper on it, as does the 750 and 1000. Most of the big four's SS bikes have slippers on them as standard equipment. I never really used mine on the road, but I know I gave it a workout when I did my LAPS trackday.

It came in handy going into T1. I still blip the throttle to try to match speed, but the slipper helped a lot, or at least it seemed like it did.

Thanks all. At $800 I figured I'd ask before I decided to "try" the mod. I have an 07 zx6r that I ride on the street. It was only my second motorcycle and I'm sure the slipper helped me out a few times. Fast forward 3 months and I found myself under or overblipping the throttle on the SV... Turn 1 I was ok (cough... coasting into the corner... plenty of time to spare).. Turn 3 as well as a few other corners I was way off.. probably rushing. With TLR front forks I'm not eligible for SS anyway... Regardless it sounds like I'd be better off spending the cash on a trackday or four...

    Thanks!

Yeah, sounds like ya need to learn how to use the clutch lever as your slipper.

Don't worry, it takes practice.... so yeah, save your money for track time

The slipper clutch is the first thing I will put on any bike, especially a twin or single cylinder engine after braided brake lines and suspension work.

You're getting a lot of response from people that don't have them telling you that you don't want it. I have one and I'm telling you that it's the best investment after suspension for RACING purposes.

Doucett must have run them in his SV's because he "didn't really need it"?

I rode Hessogotaslipper's motard an it's sweet. Coming into three just hammer the shiffter let the clutch work and match the revs. Oh so smooth!!

It definitely takes one more stressor out of the cornering equation. The less you have to focus on, the faster you can go. modulating the clutch to control wheel hop take a LOT af your attention, not to mention that it's focusses attention at the back of the bike. That's a recipe for going slow IMO.

Does a beginning track rider need it? I don't know. I suppose that starting off with one will help you go faster sooner.

    Re: '00 SV650 Slipper Clutch ?'s

For what it's worth I did opt to pick up a yoyodyne slipper clutch for the SV over the winter from Souhegan Valley Motorsports. Really slick pricing. Install was smooth even though the directions weren't the best. Since then I've put in ~18 or so practice sessions and three races with zero maintenance issues. Frankly, I love it. It absolutely gave me more confidence in the corners as I had less to focus on. I'm entering T1 & T3 much more comfortably and have dropped ~10 seconds from my lap times (1.36 -> 1.26.X). Sure I don't credit the slipper for all of that but it really is a nice to have.
