Ive been on the pedal bike trainer for about 6 weeks now, legs are in pretty good shape (its always been my week point).

Also dropping 18 pounds since xmas is a good thing as well.

    65 days to go.

SV sort of race wiring harness project is coming along. Should have that wrapped up this weekend and the new dash setup done as well.

Then its sort out mounting one of the catch bottles, put one of the other sets of fresh calipers on the front, and shes just about done.

    It's a gen 1. You need like 3 wires and a resistor.

As a very fast racer recently told me; spark, fuel & air man, it's basically just a lawn mower.

Yours is slightly less garden implement-ish. New fangled fuel injection and such.

As an engineer, I might be riding a lawn mower, and I might be able to get away with that as the race harness.

But due to me being an engineer, I have other things that I want to keep. Specifically certain warning lights that require some items and wires be left behind.

Guilty as charged on being the OCD engineer type.

Re: No 100 day countdown to LRRS?

I'm OCD that way as well... I've been plotting a new dash for the FZR and was restricting choices to those that would support the existing oil light until I got some sage advice from the chap that built the motor: It's just a simple oil level light on my machine. By the time it comes on the motor is already beyond salvaging...

    Yeeep.

Everything you can throw overboard to keep that thing as simple as possible is a win when you crashed in race 5 and are up again in race 8 and really, really, really wanna get back out there.

The more info I removed from my bike, the quicker I went. Final iteration was a kill switch, no keys, gauges or lights.

Re: No 100 day countdown to LRRS?

I understand all points and they are all valid.

    But

I want the lap timer so I know what sectors/laps are better than others and want it displayed in front of me. My suit has the 2D data system in it and will log laps, lean, accel, decal, but that's after Im off the track that I can see that.

The tach is a small digital one, and when I ride loudon I hardly ever look at it at all. I really only look at it when I ride Thompson. But its still nice to have.

Coolant temp gauge is to try and catch a early problem with the motor, if it climbs too much or if it keeps climbing once Im moving then somethings wrong and I know to shut it down and pull off.

Neutral light is so I know that Im in neutral and really only for use in the puts.

Oil pressure light (not level light) is if the oil system stops working I can kill the motor before a bigger problem happens

Coolant warning light, same as oil light.

You don't find it distracting? For me, by the time I process what is being thrown at me in a display I'd lose focus for what's ahead.

Bubbs, to each their own. If this is what it takes for him to get out on the grids, why not. I'm sure he'll make a determination later on if adjustments to his program need to be made.

Same here, I'm a horrible gauge watcher. IF I ever do the dash upgrade, it'll be setup so all I see is a tach unless there is something that requires immediate attention, THEN the appropriate warning will flash.

Having never tried it, I feel like having a lap timer with a display would be valuable. I have had more than a few races where I've settled into a pace that felt fast but turned out not to be. It can be hard to tell sometimes when you end up all alone between packs.

GPS lap timer with live display is awesome tool. Mounted on the left handle bar works for me in several tracks.

Re: No 100 day countdown to LRRS?

I had a QStarz with the display. I always intended to look at it. But when the lights went out I forgot all about it. Waaaaaaay too much to focus on in front of me. I think I maybe got to glance at it a couple times on the front straight. But splits? Ha ha ha ha ha! No. Notsomuch.

I know Chris pretty well. We talked a bunch @ bike nights about his plans to go racing this year. He's psyching himself out over minutia that doesn't actually matter and isn't actually going to contribute to him going any faster right now.

His motorcycle will be spotless. There will be exactly just the right amount of grease on every bearing. Zip ties will be trimmed and the ends filed as to not irritate the skin as you run your hand across. There will be forged aluminum parts on his bike you'll want to rub your junk on.

What I'm trying to tell him is that he's there. He should relax. Focus on the physical fitness part and let the lap timers, telemetry capture devices, and wind-tunnel testing be for now. Focus on getting through rookie weekend. Learning how to start, pass, all that shit. Review the timer data later.

I can't imagine having the bandwidth to look at a timer mid-race as a novice. I would think anyone that does have that kind of time is either parking it or sandbagging. Later as an AM, sure. GTL, sure.

My novice experience was as follows : Are you leading the race? No? Go faster, pass bitches. Yes? Go faster anyway.

This needs to be a separate thread. And I'm not racing so I should hush, but regarding the above advice, I tried that. It did not work out well.

    Agreed.

I don't know Chris at all and my post has nothing to do with him directly but if you are a new racer and are in fact worrying about shit such as lap timers, you are either being seriously misled or you are losing focus on the really important things like learning to pass somewhere else on the track besides the brakes in T3, hitting your marks, pushing those marks incrementally, situational awareness, avoiding target fixation......to name a few.

I bring up target fixation because I am baffled by the folks who know they need to avoid it when the time comes and still they put all sorts of things in place to promote it.

The singular focus, as Colin alludes to, needs to be on the rider and the correct prep of the equipment. The lap timer comes in when you are looking for tenths and hundredths otherwise the only thing it's telling you is how slow you are.

Go through a season without a crash. Do that THEN start adding the distractions.
