Now, it still could be made from cold forged chinese chocolate too... but it'd be a fun experiment to find out.
I bet they upgraded from chocolate to pot metal for this one. moving in the right direction

MMmmmmmm... Chinese White Metal. Scientists around the world are still trying to figure out how the are able to make castings from it that support their own weight.

Don't forget for any bike to be considered in the Formula 3 class it must be available and DOT approved for registration in the USA.

    Party pooper!

In all seriousness, is there a min production number requirement, or does the chinese vunderbar machine I found qualify if it's got a valid MSO?

FWIW Ari Henning races a CBR250 out here against the Ninja 250/300's and finishes either 1st thru 3rd normally. He can't go 'buck wild' on the build either... But he is riding the wheels off it.

Ari's achievements on the CBR are what I've been basing my theoretical wheelbarrow load of money end result specs for the CBR on, primarily the weight. If he can strip his down that far within WERA and other's tight rules, I should be able to too within the open Cat A requirements.

And yes, still nuts, although my focus has turned to Yamahas mostly now. No chance of getting Tech 3 to support my Yamaha M½ is there?

The plan is to keep a reasonable short list of bikes to manage/police the dual category rule of stock plus modified machines.
    Areas for consideration:
    1. Of course, has to be register-able as is (so the likes of $7K KTM race machines that have VIN's that allow for registration with lots of add-on-bits can't get it etc).
    2. Common and widely available = popular model
    3. Power to weight ratio measured in HP/ton
    4. Affordability
So a valid Chinese machine will probably not make it until it becomes popular - but propose away if it becomes USA legal. A$1.5K price would be attractive and aid consideration

The idea of the class is- low(er) budget exciting racing, attract new, and also younger racers into the sport... E.g., buy a widely available 250, run it stock to get the race craft etc and then on original platform investment modify for competitiveness.

You can't, which is why it's not on the accepted list yet.

I saw a video of him on that thing. railing it but looked like it was hard because of the lack of power.

Oh no, the R25 would be a separate, new project. The M½ is already in my stable and in progress. That said, the R25 is damn hot looking in race bodywork, if the price was right I might run one.

We'll have to see how that bike fits in. I've had a number of talks with guys who have extensive experience with the Ninja 250 and 300, and we know where those bikes end up after several different modification levels. The 390 is going to be a 2015 release for KTM, but it's possible that they might let one slip out so that we can test it and see how it stacks up (much like we did with the pre production 690 Duke that we had in September). Stay tuned later in the year for that one.

Might be a stupid question but I just bought a Honda Grom & im in the process of putting a 223cc kit in it. After seeing this thread made me think if I could race in this class with the Grom. Not sure how competitive it would be until its done & I get to put it on the dyno.

By the rules, you can't touch the motor from the cylinder down, piston is fair game but nothing else. The Grom by the rules wouldn't be able to match a 300 for power to weight. They'd have to make a new category for the mods needed to go to 223cc...

Since it is only 125cc they should let you do anything to it. I hope they change the rules so you can build the bottom end, in order to make the Grom a 223cc you have to bore the cases. I would def enter it in a few races if allowed. It would be a blast to ride the wheels off the Grom & pass people on this tiny little bike.

Oh yeah sure let's make an exception to the rules just for you!

I've vaguely been following a guy on another forum that runs an NSR50 with a group in NJ called MiniGP. When the Grom was announced he popped wood and wouldn't shut up about it. Later he actually won one through some sort of drawing. He says he fully intends to run it in MiniGP, even if it isn't competitive.

I have to believe that Boxshop would be the place for that machine, if anywhere.

Primary rule restriction that'd block the Grom is the general standard that requires 15" wheels minimum...

Hence why my 70 never made it into the motard class.

Ah, and the Grom has 12's..
Still seems like the most appropriate place to petition for a class or rule. More appropriate than the 250/300 class at LRRS.

    O.k> who's doing this???

"A new rider, Thomas Cronan aboard his Honda 250cc Rebel (Yes, I said 250 Rebel) running in the M/G-250/4 class, ran an impressive 81+MPH and this young man is destined for racing faster and faster. The Honda Rebel even impressed me for it's top speed without any real aerodynamics to speak of. Outstanding Thomas. Great Job, Well Done!!!"

Re: 250/300 class for LRRS next year?

The real reason the Grom would not be allowed is that this new class has a unique rule structure in that there is a specific list of bikes that are in, and nothing else is allowed. So, if anyone wants to compete on a model that is not on the list they have to petition to have it accepted into the class.

Oh, sorry, Boxshop has no such restriction, LRRS/CCS does. I should have clarified.
