Unless I missed it, we are discussing Hawks and SV's in this thread so with that I'm saying that, a MW compared to an SV or a Hawk, anywhere in the 20's (or even 30's) tire wear isn't going to be much different when the conditions are similar and repeatable.
there's a big piece of the equation. I've destroyed a medium rear in I think 5 or 6 races running 20-23s. medium+ I did 20 races (3 of them 25 minute GTUs) plus I think 6 practices and a track day this year. current rear has 6 track days on it, all at tracks easier on tires than NHMS and the right side it close to being done. either gotta change it after practice or after GTU/HWSS. Granted I never changed any suspension settings with the medium which I would probably do if I was gonna run a medium again.

being smooth and weighing nothing also helps me.

If you lack self control (I sure did) reconsider in line jap 4 cyls. Lot of hi revving power for NHMS that can/will send you sky high or helmet banging low in the corners from ham fisting the throttle. Wish I started with a SV. when I did track days with my Buell I could whack the throttle mid corner, tire would slip and the rev limiter (what was it, 9,000 rpm?) would stop the impending doom in milliseconds and just keep going. Not so with R6

Hey Bergs, long time, I hope all is well...

Hey anyone, whats current cost for infield pass? might go up this weekend to watch races w/wife and show her the corner(s) that I almost lost my life in..
    Thanks

That was on the old Pirelli Diablo (a SOFTER compound and carcas tire than what most people run now) on a 400lb EX500 (roughly the same weight as most 600's) so I don't see how you could NOT include it in this conversation about LW bikes vs MW bikes and tire life.

EX, Hawk, SV, Motard, it doesn't MATTER what LW bike you're talking about, equal pace, a LW bike is going to be easier on tires than a 600. Period.

Yes you do. Crashes are VERY expensive on bikes that don't crash well.

Don't race after doing your first TD.
Tons of other tracks do weekend TD's, just not NHMS. NYST and NJMP are your closest options.

Do yourself and your potential competitors a favor and get more experience before considering riding competitively.

Re: Advice looking for first race bike

The wise decision is def to do more TD's, but the novice class is a lot more "novice-y" now with the new format. I'm a little less opposed to making a quick jump to racing with few or no TD's under the belt now with the way things are structured.

Needless to say I think that's also kind of a case-by-case judgement call kinda thing, though.

The novice class used to be a full level of its own with a full line up of classes to race in, nowadays its more of a proving ground to show that you can be safe to ride with the AM's and EX's while still being able to race each other.

As far as the first race bike thing goes... you'll probably get the most out of an SV but its all personal preference. I'm an I4/MW kind of guy personally, but to each their own, racing is fun no matter what you're on.

Fewer classes & new advancement rules. More experienced novice are getting the boot like a gassy bulldog so that the Novice class is much more beginner friendly.

I should add that I will be doing as many TDs as possible, it just looks like it may be hard for me to do more than 2 or 3 a year. NYST running weekend days helps a lot, hopefully there will be some weekend days at Thompson next year as well.

This might be a more reasonable plan for now:
Get a race-ready SV for next year, wait until I see the 2014 track day schedules and request vacation days before I make the call on racing vs TDs only to start the season.

I take exception to that, especially if said middleweight bike is set up properly. Maybe you meant to say 1k's "burn up tires fast [and] I mean fast."

And once again, we are comparing Hawks and SV's to a MW and nothing more.

Why is it you don't you argue with John? Afterall, he posted the exact same thing I've been saying all along.
