AMA Pro Racing Mandates Brake Lever Guards

    Today's post from the AMA

    http://www.amaproracing.com//assets/...m_medium=email

John Ulrich told me last year that he thought that this was a good idea, and expects many club organizations to follow suit. There are a number of options out there, and of course Woodcraft does have a product that many riders have been using for the entire season. We believe our guard to be the most economical and most effective choice, but regardless of which product you buy - and there are several options now - we support this move of the AMA (following the lead of MotoGP) to help prevent some big crashes that can hurt riders. Other clubs may follow suit next year as well.

To help riders who want to get this done early - Woodcraft is offering a free replacement guard with the purchase of any handguard kit until Thanksgiving. If you order one on the site, we'll throw the free spare in there, you don't have to request it. LINK TO WEBSITE HERE

I don't know why the AMA didn't require them this year after what happened at Daytona last year.

Got mine earlier this year. I dig em!

Wish I got in on the free replacement guard deal.
Definitely jump in on that if you're at all interested in covering your ass... er... levers.

Same here. To those "late adopters," definitely take advantage of Woodcraft's offer.

Just make sure you check the brake lever action when you put them on.

These saved my ass three times this year. Worth the investment (although I cant imagine the engineering hours to design or cost of materials to build justify the price tag these all sport).

We spent a long time working on the design, and literally tens of thousands on the molds and fixturing to make them. ...plus the patent attorney, but you can't really count that in the cost. We believed in the product enough that we were good with making the investment. I've seen too many ugly crashes that a $109 brake lever guard could prevent, and too many guys who could use the protection of something outside their hand (I now know 4 people who are missing a pinkie finger - added Roger Lee to the list this past weekend)

Believe me, Eric, I'm a proponent. Like I said, I can think of three times this year that had I, or the guy I was banging up against, not had your guards on the bars, I'd have been in the dirt; the first incident left me a happy customer.

I guess it just pains me when safety products end up being expensive, since I don't think folks are as apt to spend the money on them then. It goes twofold for these, since this is one of the best products that you can put on your bike to make racing safer, not just for you, but for the riders around you.

    Eric,
what is the free guard, a left or a right??? Bit of an issue with them not being the same.

The free guard is for whatever you purchase....buy a RH Kit, get a free RH gaurd, buy both, get both.

    Dave,

Fortunately, I think that we are by far the cheapest solution on the market......also, if you set it up where there is enough bar sticking through the guard to protect it (this is one of the keys to the design), then it only costs $29 to replace the part the breaks. I tried to really think this out to make it as inexpensive as possible to have on there.

This is how they performed for me. I dropped the bike in 1a and it slid to the tires.. The guard did well. It did wear through the replaceable plastic part. I am very pleased..I think you guys did a great job with the design

Eric, can you explain this a little further? I don't quite understand what you mean here.

Re: AMA Pro Racing Mandates Brake Lever Guards

if you follow the directions and keep a 10mm clearance from the end of the lever to the guard all the way through its travel you'll be good. just buy them Brendin (and everyone else).

I gotta buy at least a full new left side as I destroyed the whole thing in my crash. the plastic snapped off and the metal wore down probably about half of it. right side has some rash from the last weekend but its still good. might just buy a whole new set. complete spare brake side wouldn't be a bad thing.

Re: AMA Pro Racing Mandates Brake Lever Guards

I know most people race with aftermarket clip-on's, but has anyone try to install this on an SV with OEM clip-on's? As I look at my bike there is simply no room for it unless I mount it on the bar end, which I think is not gonna work.

pict for reference only, not my actual bike:

No they will not fit the stock clip-ons. I tried. I ended up with a nice set of WC clip-ons as well.

Re: AMA Pro Racing Mandates Brake Lever Guards

I'll try to answer all of the questions at once.

First, I can bring them to the banquet for anyone who orders them. If you guys just give us a call and ask to have us do that for you we can certainly do that.

Second, since OEM bars do not have the ability to have extra handlebar sticking through the grips (most have the bar ends shown in the photo of the stock bike above), there is not a place to use these on OEM clipons. We have considered making an adapter for all the different OEM bars, but as someone pointed out most racers use clipons so that they can have cheap replacement bars.

Third, pushing a little extra bar through the grip will offer more protection for the guard. You can see in the photo below that there is some bar protruding through the gaurd...and the more bar that sticks through, the more protection the gaurd has from crash damage.

I've never seen online retailers sell these. Are they only available through woodcraft directly?
