Re: Attention In The Haddock! - Important Message Regarding Transponders!

What's with the instruction to charge for 2+ days? That's more than twice what the mfg recommends.

    Straight from AMB:

Connect the adapter to the individual charging cradle or to the
34-position charger case, place the transponder(s) inside and
connect it to the appropriate power source.
When charging, the transponder’s LED will flash red indicating
the transponder is charging. A steady green LED indicates that
the transponder is fully charged after approx. 14 hours.

    Usage
A full charge yields a minimum of 4 days use. The number
of green blinks of the LED is the MINIMUM number of days
before the battery is empty. When the LED blinks red, the
transponder will work less than 24 hours. A steady red light
means the transponder could stop working at any moment.

    Advice
Charge the transponder once every 3 months. Do not charge longer than necessary as this will reduce the life time of the battery. Doing so voids your warranty.

Re: Attention In The Haddock! - Important Message Regarding Transponders!

The last time I rented a transponder from LRRS it went dead by Saturday night. My Sunday races were not timed. I did not receive any points. I race the same reces each round. I do accumulate points. I do place fairly well in races. Yes, I was upset.

I know, I am only an AM, it was my 1st full season as a racer, I was still trying to find my way....not the point.

My solution? I purchased my own transponder.....a hard wired, permanently mounted to the bike transponder. No recharging, no forgetting, no nonsense. If my bike is running, my transponder is working.

(I understand some people have more than 1 bike, etc. The hard wired unit works for me!)

Also interesting that 5 blinks rates as "good to average" battery. I had mine repaired last year and never saw more than 4 blinks from it. I don't think I've ever seen an AMB transponder blink 5. I was told that 4 blinks is good. Never had any trouble with scoring or ever got a talking to. Was still going at 2-3+ blinks at the end of the weekend.

Also I was referred to a repair service in Australia. Was told that was who NHMS used. Looks like that has changed.
With the weak AUS dollar the fees were not much worse than what was reported here, despite the shipping. I was very happy with the speed of turnaround, communication, and work done.

This information wouldve been great to have had back in december when there was all winter to get transponders out for refurb and back in plenty of time. now with 2.5 weeks to round 1 and the next reasonably sized gap between rounds not till after round 3 (CCS Atlantic Schedule unaccounted for) its a pretty moot point to put out this info now as there is no guarantee that they will be back in time.

But they did send it out earlier. Easily recall seeing this at least a month ago.

I read that post back then too but he's a little slow so you have to consider who you're dealing with.

Re: Attention In The Haddock! - Important Message Regarding Transponders!

Can we get any clarification as to why we are being instructed to void any warranty by charging our batteries for 3 times longer than what AMB suggests? Is this a procedure that AMB acknowledges?

Re: Attention In The Haddock! - Important Message Regarding Transponders!

If you think it's dying, your options are:

    A) Under warranty? Chase it with AMB! Why are you reading this?
    B) Not under warranty, if not sure the batt is dying try this test procedure.

The instructions above are not for normal use, this is a test procedure LRRS has come up with based on their inventory of units and personal experience plus the input of the service center they're working with, that they're offering as a way to tell if yours is failing. I suspect they've found many units signal as fully charged when they aren't, hence the longer charge time for the test. As far as AMB, they're not going to acknowledge nothing, they want you to rent a Flex unit once yours dies, and aren't going to budge on what they've published for warranty policies.

Is this your response or are you speaking on behalf of LRRS?

Three times the recommended charge duration is fairly poor advice, IMO, and the way that letter reads tells me a few folks don't fully understand what they are saying.

Good news! You don't have to follow it!

I sincerely hope that one day modern science and engineering are able to come up with excavation equipment capable of reaching and removing that chip on your shoulder against LRRS. In the mean time, have fun on your crusade. I think you've picked a poor topic to blow the war horns over but whatever, you have fun now!

Re: Attention In The Haddock! - Important Message Regarding Transponders!

In other words, Josh, you are not speaking on behalf of LRRS, just posting assumptions on how they arrived at 3x the charge duration as recommended by AMB.

That's all you had to say.

I might have some experience with batteries and know that the AMB charger isn't a smart charger. This means it will always be attempting to charge the battery, and there is no internal shut off in the transponder, so an extended charge time can, and will, ruin a battery no matter how new or old it is. When I read that document the first thing that came to my mind was "the first step they want in order to ensure the battery is bad is to ruin it?" Because that is what 2+ days of charging will do.

As far as my "crusade"........hardly. I see information gaps and am trying to get additional info so I can be comfortable with the things I am being told to do. Why you consistently take it as a personal offense is beyond me.

For a very long time, whenever you and I got into a debate, the way in which you worded your posts almost always gave me the impression that you cared less about the issue at hand and more about proving me wrong and making me look like an idiot.

I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one to get that feeling.

Re: Attention In The Haddock! - Important Message Regarding Transponders!

Josh's 1st reply was largely opinion-based. This tells me Josh didn't in fact have an answer so rather than saying "I don't know" or better yet, choosing to not respond, he instead feels the need to eventually reply with some snarky defensive accusatory post after being questioned on his knowledge. This tells me he is taking it personal and is not something I have control over.

The only thing I have asked for is how we arrived at a recommendation that is more than 3 times the recommended charge duration and are we aware that the action alone is more than capable of killing a battery? No one here has the answer so far.

If you concern is getting that information, you should contact one of the people who authored the document. To ask the question here seems like a waste of time, no? None of the three people listed at the bottom of that document frequent NESR, at least not that I'm aware of.

Not entirely a waste of time in my mind, Mike, since we do have officials that frequent the forum who might be able to chime in.
In addition to that, I did not notice this email come thru and saw the info only when Mr Butler posted it so I put up my question here as I did not have an email to respond to......again, at least not that I recall seeing.

Also, I did not see any contact info within the document so does this mean we are to place a phone call?

Well, we aren't to place a phone call; I have a wired transponder.

If you want clarification, I can only imagine an email or call to Brenda Leonard, initiates and signs every single LRRS email communication, would be a good start.

I'm sure the others here who've expressed concerns about the transponder charging will be appreciative of any answers you're able to obtain.
