    bass ackwords thoughts on racing

found this gem on another forum, the entire thread is hilarious and full of people both agreeing with him and calling him a blithering idiot. (this was a completely serious post). I think the guy just got into racing.

So, I've been doing a lot of reflecting about racing recently, this being the beginning of my third season. And I thought I would share with you guys the top thing or two I've learned.

    Just one man's opinion:

    1) Buy a brand new bike. This might seem stupid, but the truth is that they're problem free. If you can avoid fucking with too much of them, you'll never have mechanicals like everyone else. I'm not going to justify it, just an observation. Also, finance it, might seem counter intuitive but I think it's good to have a bike bill over your head, it always gives you incentives to quit. You want to have tons of incentives to quit so that you know if you race, you really want to. Also, you can sell the stock plastics for nearly the price of race plastics.

    2) It's all about suspension and setup, this is more important than everything. Go out and buy the best suspension you can, forget about all the other stuff (including gearing, PCIII, pipe, clipons, brakes, case covers etc....). Once you've got it, find a suspension expert that you can work with ALL DAY at the track, pay for 2 days a month or two apart. Then go out there and get a perfect setup, then do a few trackdays and go meet with him again.

Virtually all novice crashes, IMHO, result from bad setup. It's true, almost any bike on brand new tires will lean mind-bending distances, so low sides don't come from too much lean as much as you think. Same with high sides, almost every high side at our level comes from bad shock settings. Good shock settings let you feel spin and try and get it back. Bad settings leave you looking at the bike upside down. I truly believe at the end of the day it's all about settings.

    3) Get the best paint job you can buy, if you paint it pretty you'll take a few less chances.

    4) Always get the best tires you can buy and put less laps on them. Go straight to dunlop slicks if you can. Here's the reason, you know the tires can outperform you, thus you can completely stop thinking about it and focus on your riding. And since you got a perfect setup in step 2, you should be fine.

Cause nothing says racing like taking less chances.

if you buy a more expensive bike like a GSXR1000 you'll be less likely to crash it, since its so expensive you'll take less risks....to the point where you might not even race it, unless you do, then you know you're a racer.

Desmocedici it is then. As a bonus I'll know the bike is beyond my abilities so I can just toss it into 1 at full crank knowing I've got a performance saftey cushion.

I also like financing my race bike though, cause after some douchwad crashes into me, despite my best attempts to stay safe and totals my brand new bike I only have 5 years of payments to tell me I'm a racer.

you should also strip your race bike down to the frame, plate every piece of metal in solid gold and wear boots & gloves studded with real diamonds. That way you'll NEVER crash & people will know you REALLY mean business.

he makes a good point about the importance of suspension set up though...too bad the other 98% is just silly. everyone knows a fresh pretty paint job is a practical pavement magnet.

the worse part is it's well written enough to be mistaken for actual good advice.

Reverse psychology for his competition? He's probably the guy out there with the unpainted bike with a salvage title.

Re: bass ackwords thoughts on racing

I have a friend who would write something like that. No matter what a physics book might say, or what the bike actually does, his phenomenological reality is always something else (or at least seldom matches my own perception and knowledge) and nothing could *ever* be a rider error. If you ask me, this could be a bogus post to simply stir the pot.

I'd love to read the agreements, which other forum?

I must not "really" want to race since I spent all winter long eliminating excuses.

Re: bass ackwords thoughts on racing

i read a few of the posts. it looks like all the posters in that thread joined in jan of 08.. seemed odd, and the language between the 3 most prevalent posters is similar enough to point at one young kid talking to himself with 3 different accounts with very few other people actually chiming in. I love the description of the highsides.. he doesn't actually know what chopping the throttle means.

I don't think CHOPPING THE THROTTLE has much to do at all with highsides. How many times have you been highsided off a bike?

    ...

Yeah, there's three kinds of rear orientated crashes in my experience. One is you're over real far and the rear loses traction but slips out and you lowside. That's pretty rare.

The second is that it just keeps spinning and you can't really seem to get it back and then it catches and.... bam. sometimes it catches because you release the throttle, but by then it's pretty far out of line.

And then there's the worst highsides. You're going along like a hero one moment and the next you're flying through the air thinking WTF? Am I not on the bike any longer? WTF?

Well setup suspensions get wheel spin all the time, and it doesn't toss them.
