I'll be heading up to New Brunswick on vacation so I'm planning to bring my RS125 and race at Shubie (http://www.atlanticmotorsportpark.com/).
How has been your experience with crossing the border with a race bike? Since the RS125 is a pure racing machine it has no VIN number and obviously has never been registered with a DMV. I bought it privately so I don't have any record of the purchase.
Should I expect some hassle going into Canada or coming back into the USA? I expect to be crossing at the Calais ME - St Stephen NB border crossing where I usually don't have any issues (except for the bit of hard time they gave me on the Canadian side the time I crossed on the EX250!).

i understand he doesnt have a title for the bike, but there HAS to be some sort of Bill of Sale. you've got to get some sort of a reciept for purchasing a bike that proves you own it.
i take a copy of my BoS with me when I bring my bike anywhere in the event I get asked for proof of ownership.
If there is no title and it's a private sale, 2 people can sell something and not write a BoS and therefore there is no record. Him saying that he doesn't have any record of the purchase would lead me to believe that is the case. So no, there doesn't HAVE to be a bill of sale.

Obsolete, that's correct, when I bought it, I wasn't planning on taking it across the border so didn't think of making up a bill of sale.
Typically, the Canadian officials seem to worry about stuff people intend to leave in Canada while the US officials tend to focus on making sure I'm not a terrorist, so I'm expecting more potential hassle on my way in to Canada. I'm planning on having a printout of the race schedule with me as evidence I'm going up to race and not to sell the bike.

I have no clue about boarder crossing and the laws but if it were me I would: 1. call customs for the US and Canada just to see what they say and 2. find the bill of sale you lost.

Thanks for the advice, calling customs before I leave is a good idea. I'll do that.

I worked at the Border after 9/11. Depending on the border guard it can be difficult but usually getting into Canada was easier than coming back.
As was stated I would call Customs and ask for advice.

this is your best bet.
when I rode at Calabogie, TPM had a sheet on their site that printed out that said you were there to ride for these specific days and they said you should make another sheet listing all the stuff you're bringing (spares, bike, gear etc) and present that at the border going in so they can make a record of you bringing it in then when you go to come back home they wont charge you customs on stuff you didn't buy in Canada.

I would bring something to prove its yours...i've waited at the US border for quite a while b/c I couldnt prove I owned my gsxr...
I have never been asked for paperwork with a race bike...
...but, have you ever seen Shubie?
I rode a few laps there a couple years ago. Makes NHMS look like Barber!
Seriously...its a rock wall strewn goat path! Should be a lot of fun! Take pics!

We went to Sanair this spring. We stopped at the US side before crossing and got a declaration form where we listed what we were bringing up. They came out and verified. On the way back we handed the border guard the form, he looked in the trailer and off we went. Safest least painless way to go in my opinion especially for racebikes without titles or registrations.
Good luck!
This reminds me of a time I went to Montreal (pre 9/11).
When I came back I showed the US Customs Agent my Military ID.
He asked for my leave papers.
I told him I wasn't on leave. I just went to Montreal for the weekend, so no leave papers.
He looked at me strangely and asked "Are you a deserter?"
I laughed and said "Yeah, I deserted back in 1969 from the Vietnam war."
He didn't think that was very funny....
I would suggest not joking around with Custom Agents...They don't seem to have a very well developed sense of humor.

I got hassled last week. No hassle 2 weeks before. I wouldn't set out without a minimum of bill of sale but ideally a title.

No problems getting into Canada. Will find out tomorrow if returning to the US will be as smooth...
This was my first time at Shubie and I loved it! The track is bumpy but fun and technical. The people there are great, very friendly and laid back.
I'm planning to make it to at least one race a year there from now on.

Did you camp? If you have a chance to get to Peggy's Cove (Indian Cove actually,) and stay at OceanStones, it's really nice!
