How do you camp at the track?

I'm looking for insight/Ideas for my means of camping/transporting my gear/bikes to the track for the 2020 season early.

I've spent some time admitting the numerous forms of "camping" and DIY toy haulers at Loudon the past two rounds and have been pondering the idea of upgrading for next year.

Currently I'm borrowing my parents travel trailer and hauling that up with my truck while a buddy follows with both our bikes on my three rail trailer.

I'm looking at doing a partial toy hauler conversion to something like a 7x14 v-nose aluminum trailer and pull it with my 1500. Throw in a set of strapless systems for 2 bikes, some insulation on the walls, tile floor and a set of bunks.

I'm trying not to spend a fortune but also understand you get what you pay for in most cases. I feel a separate vehicle would only cause head aches as its yet another thing to cover maintenance on vice a trailer especially because I already have a truck to pull with.

Any one have experience doing something like this? Any lessons learned? Any things to avoid? Pics only make things better if possible.

    Thanks!

So, I've done the Hotel option, tent option, 6x10 cargo trailer conversion option, and am now driving a 31' Class C fun mover RV. Each has it pros and cons. If your truck will pull a 7x14 without issue, and you're ok relying on bathroom/shower facilities at where ever you're going a conversion as you mentioned is a sweet way to roll. At a minimum, put in either Vortex or Fantasic vent fans as they'll actually move air compared to the dinky little fans most vents get. Max Air covers over the vents mean you can have them open when it's raining, or towing. If you only put in one roof vent, put in either floor or wall vents as well so you can actually get air movement through the trailer.

Roof mounted ACs are loud but oh so nice to have, and will cool better than portable ACs. I've seen some people mounting split heat pump setups on trailer conversions, no idea how they hold up over time.

For lighting, Home Depot has 4' Lithuania Lighting LED strips that are low profile and throw a TON of light. Plus, you can put them on a regular dimmer, I used two in my 6x10 and it'll go from mood lighting (single strip on, dimmer on low) to surgical suite with both on full blast which is nice for working on stuff in the trailer. 7x14 I'd go with 4 of those. There are 8' as well, but they use an industrial dimmer setup that's more wires to bother with.

On the bunks, my setup is too small to have permanent beds AND bikes and gear, so I deploy a cot. It sucks. If you have the room to put a permanent bed in with a proper mattress, even if it's a fold down, huge improvement. If you have the room, a wall between the bike area and living area would be nice too if you're going to sleep in there with them loaded.

What's your budget? I could be convinced to part ways with my 6x12 conversion.

I bought a relatively cheap 7x14 steel frame enclosed utility trailer that was already wired up to be plugged into a standard power outlet... stuck a small fridge & some shelves in there and built a bed w/ a 4" thick memory foam mattress that folds down from the wall. It gets the job done.

after tenting for 7 years, i will never go back. 6x12 trailer, or a toy hauler is worth the cost of towing.

Re: How do you camp at the track?

I used to stay at the Fairfield inn in concord. With the penguin school discount, it was $79.00 a night. They stopped doing that this year. I ended up buying a 26’ travel trailer and replaced my suburban with an F-250 long bed. I store the camper at the track and pull o down Thursday nights. I tow up with my enclosed 5’x10’ trailer with the bikes and put that near the garages. I haven’t needed to yet, but if I go elsewhere I can ramp load the bikes into the bed and still tow the travel trailer. I pay for the camping and use the hookups. They only charge for 2 of the 3 nights so it’s $50.00 to have the running water etc. It was more expensive than a conversion, but I wanted a travel trailer for other activities. I love having it for the race weekends though. Very comfortable and good to relax in. It was nice last round when it was hot. I was able to chill in the a/c between race 3 and 13.
