If you run into a wall with a helmet on, you still ran into a wall.
My thoughts are with the families, terribly sad day.

Well I might as well bring you all up to speed on my part of the adventure. The first part is a bit embarrassing. No, it's really friggin embarrassing. You know that guy that's the first one to crash at a track day. Yeah, that one. He didn't even make it a lap before pavement surfing. Hi. Nice to meet you. My name is John. Nothing else to see here. Please move along.
Joel and Gino busted ass and my bike and I were back together and made the next practice. Between my spares and a master cylinder from Bill we had everything we needed. My right hand was sore and slightly swollen but I had a lot of learning to do. The next practices went much better and my times dropped and confidence rose. The track is crazy. I could fall asleep for portions of the track with the throttle wide open and in top gear.the first time on the banking I was hanging off the side of the bike, probably looking like a tool. I mean, I'm making a left so I should be off the left side of the bike, right? Wrong. Tuck in low and lay down on the tank. Chest and helmet both. Keep the throttle pinned. Longer, longer. Just keep going. Patience is the name of the game here. Brake late, turn in late. Despite a (severe) lack of horsepower I think Bill and I may stand a chance of a respectable finish by pushing our brake markers and working out some details on the corners. Luckily Joel and Gino have been offering some great insights.
Dinner last night was courtesy of Mr. And Mrs. Berrio. I can't say enough about their hospitality. While we were reclining in the pool they were prepping a feast with Gino manning the grill. Steaks, mashed potatoes, etc, etc. Apple pie ala mode for dessert. Epic! During the post feast shower I discovered some bruising on my palm and it was plenty sore. Not a good sign. Spent the night with my hand elevated.
Woke up this morning to find the side of my hand swollen tight like a sausage. Decided not to practice. We'll see if that decision pays off. RICEing and fingers crossed all day.
It's crazy hot down here. 90 something degrees out, bright sun and sick humidity. Not my type of weather. I'm hoping for more clouds on the next couple days.
Two practices and GTL tomorrow! Here we go!

RIP to the fallen riders. Rick Shaw was an institution. Shame.
Reminds me of when i was there in 2003 when Brian from MightyDuck was killed in practice. I never want to see someone that badly hurt again.
Papa and Mama Berrio are some of the nicest people you can meet!
This place is insane. Starting to pick up the pace on the infield but I run out of gas on the banking. Losing a ton of time there but Gino, Joel and John have help change almost everything associated with fuel and think we have it figured out. John and I are definitely bringing knives to a gun fight but stranger things have been known to happen. Today and tomorrow we will let it rip and see what happens.
The Berrio's have been the nicest hosts we could ever hope for. It made the trip that much more amazing. I know where Gino gets it from now.
Sad news yesterday, condolences to the families.
Good luck Bill, John, Jim, and whomever else I am forgetting! John, sorry about your hand. Heal up quick.
John try some ice on your hand rather than rice. good luck

Unbelievable experience.
How did you guys do down there?
Frenchy clocked a 2:02, I got a 2:08
We entered late, so were in the pack of the MW grids. Finished mid pack or better.
I did both ASRA races on my 600. Finished 4th in the 1000 class, and ended up 3rd overall in the amateur 1000 class for the season.
Not bad for our first time there.
Best track experience I've ever had. First time I've ever NOT wanted to leave the track. Every weekend at Loudon, I just want to get it over with. Daytona, I was signing up for additional races. Knowing I was dead last on the grid,
I just wanted more laps and better times.
