I didn't read the entire article, but I have to wonder how easily it deploys. In many crashes I've seen during GP races, the rider and bike are in the condition where they simply pick the bike up and keep going. With this device in use, I would think that would no longer be possible. Great idea though
Very intriguing.
Since weight is such a huge factor in racing I wonder how the power to weight ratio is affected with the added pounds.
It is supposed to be coming here in 2008. I'm very curious as to the pricing. This cannot be cheap.
IXS messed with this in Europe for several years with the STUNT jacket. You had a tether that attached to the bike, and when you separated the collar inflated via a small CO2 canister.
Liability issues with the USA, plus the canister did not meet US laws and the jacket never make it to these shores for sale.
Great idea if they can make it work on a racer / daily rider scale.
Putting his hands in the air, like he just doesn't care.

The deployment system sounds interestind... and expensive. If it can deploy before the rider hit the ground, it will be a lifesaver. I saw it in action during the 250 race and it deployed after the rider hit the ground. That was an easy lowside though. It will signall the end of picking the bike up and soldiering on for points...
Thats funny because as my senior engineering project we actually designed and built something very similar and believe it or not it worked well..... looked like crap but it worked.
The way we did it was with a low power RFID chip and sampling hundreds of times per second.
