    rain riding ?

I figured the NESR racers were the ones to ask..

Today I was riding at a pretty good clip 60+ on rt 27 in MA....suddenly the skies opened up and it started to rain....now I have ridden in the rain before but as I was taking a left hand sweeper the bike just wanted to go straight...after a little pucker factor close to the guardrail...with a F250 riding my ass....What is the best thing to do? The bike just seemed to push through the turn.

    Thanks

    PD

The best thing to do is slow down and straight line the turn. When it starts to rain all the oils come out of the road, so it's slippery.

I wondered about this and then I realized that the density of oil is less than water. Oil floats in the ocean, and it floats on top of wet roads. Be careful...

    rain riding ?

In the motorcycle class this summer they told us that when it starts to rain, all the oils and dirt rise to the surface...you should, if you can, get off the road for a few mintues and let the rain wash all the crap away..than you can ride on the wet stuff a little easier...

As a general rule of thumb, after about a half an hour of steady rain, you'll have about 75% of your traction. That first half hour can be dangerous due to the schmeg (oil, grease, antifreeze, etc) getting flushed to the surface of the pavement...

PD, not sure about a couple things... road surface? a lot of tar snakes? or more asphalt than agregate? ... Tires? sport touring compound? sport compound? supersport compound? race takeoffs? how new, tread depth.

if the sky really opened up, loss of traction due to hydroplaning is prolly more likely than road oils.

I run sport touring tires or ....supermotard tires in winter... the motard tires are phenominal in rain.... slow down.... what for ?

I think sport touring tires will outperform the sport tires in rain...
    they have more tread depth

    learn to be smoother.

    Thanks folks..
Based on your input I think it was a combo of some hydroplaning and oil/gunk.

The sensation was one of riding on ice and it really felt as though any input would cause the Front to wash out. I do know that I did not touch the brake in fact it was more maintaining throttle. I did as was suggested and ended up straightlining the turn towards the guardrail, felt some grip and made the turn.

RandyO..I have some B010s on my SV..tread is still good but there are plenty of Tar Snakes on that part of 27 and the turn is slightly off-camber.

I had been thinking of pulling off (I was sort of looking for a spot) when this happened.

    Thanks
