Drill or dremel tool better for drilling bolts?

Just wondering if the super-high speed of the dremel would make drilling holes for safety wire easier or harder.

Or you could do it with an 18v hand drill and a bunch of cheap bits from HD. Its about a 4 beer job that way.

Piggy nailed it. Low speed drill press, Ti nitride coated bits and some cutting oil. Piece of cake.

I'm a monumental cheapskate, but even for me.. WD40 is not cutting oil.

I found using a punch prior to drilling to be extremely helpful.

Re: Drill or dremel tool better for drilling bolts?

Don't use those special to or cobalt bits. Just get some good old bits for drilling metal. You want them to flex not break.

Patience and slow speed and cutting oil.

Any of those will work just fine.
A little X-Y vise and a drill press make the whole process MUCH easier if you have the space for it. A Bridgeport is even better.

I can speak to your experience with drilling safety wire holes. I think you drilled every bolt in that KTM - must have been a really long winter

I think I'm going to start calling you Meticulous Mike. I don't know what you fed that bike but the guy that helped me with the top end said it looked like the hone marks were still there from the factory - that engine is like what, 12 years old?

Re: Drill or dremel tool better for drilling bolts?

Solid carbide drill bits and center bits, hydraulic work holding vice with spots for 10 bolts, CNC mill programmed to drill a hole in each head. Clamp it, push the button, 10 safety wire drilled bolts!(+100k in equipment.). Just make sure to use coolant and get the feed and speed right. You want to center drill then drill with the bits.
