Re: Dumbest thing you've ever done on the track
What else happend in the rain Bill..........................................hahahahahahahahaha
My dumb moment was It was a Friday practice and raining. I last min decided to go out and have at it. I had my tires swapped over and came back to the pits to try and make it out for the last 20 min of open practice. Two fellow teamates told me to get dressed and they would put my wheels on for me. I changed and came out of my trailer and they handed me my bike and said "your all set, hit it" So being there was only 20 min left I proceded down twords the gap in the fence where they have the winners from the dash meet. Banged second gear on the way and went to slow down to make the gap in the fence.......................well no front brakes and grabbed the rear brakes and nothing so I made a last second decision to head for the minty new chain link fence at the end of the road rather then the concrete block building and whamo!, broken hand and concussion later I gather my self up and look around on the ground for my pride (my first expert year) and ride back to our pit. When I got back from practice so early my teamates asked what are you doing back? I responded with "umm no one pumped my brakes back u and I just smoked the fence". I was then told I should have checked them before I left ( yes I should have but come on) and was sent back out for practice after the bike was squared away, not knowing I had a concussion. Well I made it to turn 3 lap one and biffed it and decided I should take the rest of the day off. what a shitty day that was and poor Tommy's new fence sure took it hard. Lesson learned , will not let anyone touch my wheels again and muscle memory check my brakes on the way out.

Re: Dumbest thing you've ever done on the track
Working as the Starter for the USCRA, I had a brain fart and threw the green flag while Betty Bluenose was still driving down the front straight in a golf cart.
Luckily it was the 50CC class and they all went around her. I told her no more "pace car" leading the 50s to the hot grid after that.

Tried to make a double pass into 3 and stopped for lunch at the split (didn't crash). Lost a spot in the process, but went back out and regained my compusure. I hadda be a novii still, because I remember the cw's asking if I was gonna finish or just sit there.

Re: Dumbest thing you've ever done on the track
Had one race under my belt and was feeling great in the next NV practice. After that session I hear my number being called on the loudspeaker and was also being told to bring my bike to the Penguin garage - over the loudspeaker. So I wheel it over and there's Jerry Wood waiting with his hands on his hips. He abruptly (and pretty damn loud) asks me exactly how many races I've been in. I say "one". So by now a crowd is gathereing...
He then asks what pit in/out procedure is. I tell him. He then asks/yells why I didnt signal before pitting in the last session and did I see him on my left lining me up for a pass in 11. I say "omg no". He then rightfully says/yells I could've killed someone and if he ever sees me do that again he will pull my license. I told him he wouldn't see it because I wouldn't ever do that again. And I never did. So now I just ride around with my hand up at all times...There I've said it, felt good to finally let the world know what I've been keeping secret :)

Re: Dumbest thing you've ever done on the track
Alright. I'll play. The first full lap of my first trial day as a TTD control rider I was following a follow-the-leader group when I washed out the rear and low sided. Basically at walking pace. With a brand new paint job (thanks for complimenting me on it just prior Paul).
Over the winter I had replaced the fuel cap on my tank with one of those "fancy" chinese Vortex knock offs. The original gasket wasn't thick enough to keep the gas from spilling out. This was my first time on track for the year and I had a completely full tank of fuel from winter storage. The first good flick I did to turn in moistened the rear tire and away it went. It wasn't until the next time that I had a full tank when I took the bike back out on track that I even figured out what had happened. I didn't crash the next time but it didn't take too long to notice the smell/feel of gas on my leg...
Thanks for reminding me of this.

Re: Dumbest thing you've ever done on the track
After blowing a restart from 1st and watching the guys I race with pull away for a lap I decided I could take the 4 guys I was behind at once going around the outside in t1. Needless to say I ended up in the nascar 1 tire wall with my R6 on top of me. PK and his gf had a front row show for that one.

Re: Dumbest thing you've ever done on the track
One piece of advise you COULD take to avoid an epic post here. NEVER bed in brake pads around the pits...

Reading and learning are completely 2 separate things. What you are doing is reading and hopefully you can learn from other peoples experiences!!!!!!! That is a tough one.....
