Too much noise over nothing! If it's required people will adapt to the new idea and rules and go along with it.. If not it will be forgotten..
ridiculous
When I start my KTM in the morning, rules are broken. Its inevitable...

Has any official source actually said these are required for 2012?

I guess LRRS could impose the rule even if CCS doesn't, but so far, it looks like the only indication is a notice from Rising Sun Cycles(who is selling them) on a self admitted unofficial LRRS website.

I think people are blowing this out of proportion. This will make it much easier for someone to get your helmet off without injuring your neck/spine. It's actually pretty ingenious. A little on the expensive side seeing you'll need one for each helmet and need to replace it every 2 years, but worth it if you ever truly need it.
As for putting too much pressure on the skull, if your skull is broken/cracked through your helmet, you have worse things to worry about than a plastic bag assisting to get your helmet off.
Let's just hope they remember to undo the chinstrap before they start pumping...

what about helmets that already have systems like this?
Attachment 26969
That is on the Shoei X-Twelve and others
Would the Eject system work on this or would it interfer with it?
Pete - He has a point.
You mean like irrepairable brain damage due to excessive applied pressure during a brain swell situation?
The basis of my post was that introducing additional pressure to the skull is not where it's at as far as removing helmets. Cut the effing thing off if it's that serious.
Cut it off? How the hell they going to do that?

I think they would have to move your head around a bit to cut a helmet off..

I hear you, Pete, however I have that same concern in addition to many others as far as the requirement and necessity of this.
BTW, what's up with Graham's post? Mandatory? Reason I ask is because I need to make a decision on how I will conduct my race program for 2012.

Really? This is racing not knitting. Just buy it, show up, and race.

I would assume they would cut it off with a similar saw (rotory tool) that they use to cut off a cast? which if you think about it is probably the best way to remove the helmet if you have serious head trauma.
I think there would be benifits to having the device in your helmet though... obviously in certain situations it might be better to use the device than pulling the neck but just becasue the thing is in the helmet doesn't mean that have to use it to take the helmet off 100% of the time.
I totally agree that I wouldn't want thing thing putting un-neccesary pressure on my skull if I had brain swelling.
I need to design a device that cuts off helmets safely if there isn't a way to do it all ready!
____________
Also this shoei design is pretty sweet. I might have to go tray that helmet on and see how it fits!
Just wanted to chime it... Has anyone looked at the training it takes to use this system? Myself and 1 other EMT should be able to remove a helmet properly WITHOUT this system.
How about installation? What if you put it in wrong?
I just don't see the advantage.

Just curious... do the medical staff at the track leave your helmet on until you get to the hospital or remove it? I'm just wondering what the odds that they have something to cut your helmet off are.
Original
If you are not breathing, the helmet is coming off at the track. No ifs, ands or buts.
Airway is primary concern and trumps all others. Now, they are gonna be pretty careful taking it off and they have training in how to do it correctly but they aren't going to be taking 20 minutes over it if you have no airway and I'm pretty sure they aren't putting a hole in your throat either.
I'm sure someone will confirm this.
I can say at the moment that Boston Moto will not be requiring these devices until we have more information on them or NHMS makes it a requirement.
I highly encourage that everyone read the comments in Doc's link.
This is beyond just "buy one, show up and race". This system is introducing a larger margin of error on the part of the medical response team which puts you at a higher risk for injury and it's clear that many other people see this as well.
What was formerly two people removing a helmet is now potentially 3 or more.
Also, people, keep in mind that if this were to become mandatory, LRRS would be the ONLY place in the entire country that this system would be required.
I went through the WERA rule book from cover to cover last night, in additon to the 2011 CCS rulebook. Not even a mention of installing these devices or even a recommendation.
It does pose the question though, since no offical announcement has been made, is RSC trying to do nothing more that to generate sales in the offseason by putting up an unofficially "official" word? I mean, you guys do realize who owns RSC and operates the unoffical LRRS website, right?
Please (!!) educate yourselves before making a blind jump onto the bandwagon.
