Re: EX guru's... Half a lap & it dies.

    Yes he can.

    I have two theories:

    1. Bad petcock. The diaphram is allowing vacuum into the fuel supply which is overcoming the ability of the tank to provide venting. Also starving the engine for fuel in the carbs BUT allowing fuel into the vacuum port directly (hence the popping from the exhaust).

    2. It's an EX.

Re: EX guru's... Half a lap & it dies.

I heard a slight rush air when I opened the cap... nothing major, but it was there.

Tomorrow morning I'm gonna put the tank on a stand, run the fuel hose to my gas can & get a little bit of vacuum to the petcock, cap it off w/ a finger, watch the fuel flow & see what happens.

If it's a good stream that slows down as pressure decreases in the tank then I'll swap out the gas caps again (I completely tore down the original gas cap & found no obstructions.) & do the test over.

If it does the same thing then I"ll remove the spring inside the petcock.

If it does the same thing then I'll replace the vacuum hose.

If it does the same thing then I know it's probably not an issue with the gas cap or the petcock.

    Good plan?

Re: EX guru's... Half a lap & it dies.

Or, eliminate the petcock altogether using a gear oil bottle as a gas tank (make sure you vent it). Then you can see if she runs well when there is a good stream of gas.

I'm ordering a petcock rebuild right now (still). $27. Want some insurance?

    Pete!

I carry an extra cock with me to the track. I can also bring my sucker tool! If ya don't figure it out we can do exploratory in my garage.

I'm betting 3 of Dana's scallops you're having trickling troubles with your cock.

Nope, sorry. I'm gonna be pissed about this until the problem gets fixed. Two race weekends in a row down the shitter.

I didn't come up till Sunday morning... My brother's wedding was Saturday.

Re: EX guru's... Half a lap & it dies.

Recieved an email from BJ Worsham with this reply written by Dana Temple. I'm gonna give this a shot & hopefully posting his advice here will help another EXer in the future.

    BJ,
    Please forward this on.

You need to check all the obvious stuff like kinked fuel lines and/or the vacuum lines which connect the intake to the back of the petcock.
I would definately remove the diaphram from the petcock. You'll need to put a piece of thick gasket material between the the two halves of the petcock before you put it back together. Also, check the gas tank you have. If it is one of those with the two emission lines coming out of the front underside of the tank, you will need to leave one of those as a breather. I coiled an 18 inch piece of gas line under the tank and stuck a fuel filter on the end as a sort of rudimentary check valve in case of a crash.
I wouldn't start to alter the gas cap. you can do more harm than good. You don't want it to begin leaking.

    Good luck

    DT

PS if you pull out the diaphram form the petcock, be sure to cap the vacuum line at the intake.

Yes, de-vacuum the cock. Also, the gasket on the cap can block the vent, so I always relieved the gasket around the pinhole for good measure.

Will do, Paul. Thanks for the tip.

Too bad Clayton just spent 27 bucks on a new diaphragm. His symptoms were a bit different than mine though... his bike was sputtering as he neared turn 1 & almost dying between 1 & 2. (or something along those lines)

At least I found & solved the mysterious oil leak that had been plaguing me since day 1. I still can't believe the cause of that

Re: EX guru's... Half a lap & it dies.

yeah, some idiot drilled & tapped a hole through the stator case and the starter (length-wise)... except the starter that was in the bike when the hole was drilled & tapped wasn't the starter that was in there & neither was a screw, so there was 1/2 a hole (like a slot or a key-hole) allowing oil to escape (luckilly the stator cover isn't under pressure.)

I'll post pics later to show you what I mean.

My temp fix was laying a bead of RTV in the "half hole" & jamming a rolled up tire booger in there, then sliding the starter back into place... Problem solved... but once again I missed BOTH practice sessions.... which is where I WOULD have discovered the fuel issue, instead of during the warm-up lap of my friggin feature race. Had I made practice, maybe I could have solved the issue.

Good bye Amature Achievment award. Two race weekends, two DNF's in PTwins.

At least all of these problems will be fixed for the next owner.

Paul, I appreciate the advice, I'm open to listening to anything & everything you have to say and I'll most definitely look into what you've suggested but I'm very, very frustrated right now. Could it have been prevented? Yeah, sure. But it wasn't. I'm looking for solutions, that is all.

Re: EX guru's... Half a lap & it dies.

I know, believe me. I wasn't trying to rub it in.

I ran outta gas in the first race I was running away with. I had to pull in from a classic weekend race I was leading due to a bad thermostat. I binned it on my best ever lap of the track because I decided a take off med compound front was good enough.

The lows can get pretty low. You'll be back in the good times before long.

Work on the bike at home, and be thorough. There will be less suprises on the track. Another real achilles heel of the EX are the crappy connectors on the coil wires. It's worth cutting them back and putting fresh connectors on just because. use dielectric grease.

Good luck. EXs can be confounding as they start to get old and abused...

I with held my order pending your outcome.

Like I said Pete, my nice dry well lit basement is open one day next weekend for wrenching. Nip it in the butt ASAP and sleep well knowing you should be good for the end of the month.

My Ninja with a vacuum fuel tap, much like yours used to do the same thing.
    The problem has been cured.

This link will help I hope. Once I followed the advice on the link I have not had the "sudden death" re-occur.
