The aftermath. Bottom end appears intact. Bore may be salvageable. Not going to be racing for awhile though.

Richen that thing up! (just to be safe....)

Doesn't look like it melted but you have more than enough power. Not sure if the Husky's come lean from the factory (as most EPA approved bikes do). I'd go up a couple jet sizes just to keep the piston a little cooler.

That blows man. The good news is that Joel is so fast on his that I'm sure you could use his head and he'd still be in the 1:28's. Then everyone wins!

I noticed a missing exhaust valve. Did you drop one?
More damage by foreign object, than by a too lean/detonation run.

So what is the list of parts that you need? We need to get you back out there!

Are any of the damaged parts salvageable with machining etc. or do they all need to be replaced? Got some friends that do this kind of stuff that might be willing to help if I ask.

Let me know how I can help get your motor back together bud, wont be as fun without you out there pushing me to go faster.

Dropped valve is likely. I'd guess the stem actually broke. They make them thin to get them light. NEW valves are probably required on a schedule.

Right-hand exhaust valve is currently having a in-depth conversation with the left hand intake valve. Snapped at the stem. Not sure why it happened. Valves we're in spec. Jetting may have been off for the cold morning, but not enough for this.

Calling a bunch of racer-sponsoring companies looking for used and new heads. This one is going on the "Offerings to the god of speed" shelf. (Thanks Burt).

Thanks for the offers for help. Joel, the only way I'm getting out there sooner, is if I knock over a 7-11. I'm not that desperate yet.

I did have the cams out. But it was two race weekends ago. The bike ran like a top with no issues, and I put them back in correctly, of that I'm sure.

Ah-hah! George @ Uptite Racing (guy knows his Husqvarna's) mentioned the decompression/auto-decompression bit, and it started to click. My right-hand exhaust valve hit first, and broke the valve off the stem. That accounts for the first "ka-klank" I heard. Then that peice slammed into the head, and through the piston (the second "ka-klank"). Then it came to rest inbetween the lefthand intake valve and its seat (the last noise).

My belief at this point, is either I pulled, or somehow my leg came in contact with the decompression lever, and it pushed the valve just far enough to get banged. There is no signs of serious overheating in the motor, whats left of the piston doesnt' look terrible, and I don't see bluing on many of the steel parts.

Thats all theoretical at this point, but its the only thing that makes sense.

Given the amount of damage to the top of the piston - I'd keep going taking things apart. The crank and connecting rod are most likely tweaked.

Im wondering if a slightly stretched valve got fatigued and the leg-to-decomp trick started/finished the job...either way that's a nasty sight and I'm feelin for ya

did you find all the popcorn from that piston getting perforated? did it make it to the oil pickup/filter or did things just lock up at a certain point? (looks like it kept spinning for a bit).

Sorry Paul, but you're way off. It clearly an electrical problem. When the valve stem broke and the valve hit the piston, it caused the connecting rod to bend and the piston to get jambed in the cylinder bore. At the same instant the now floating valve head was pummeled between the cylinder head and the piston dome. This caused a dramatic loss of RPM's and a resulting loss of intake tract velocity. Because the motor could no longer sustain combustion cycles, the crank stopped spinning. Once the ECU was no longer receiving a signal from the crank sensor, it will not fire the secondary coil. This causes an immediate loss spark. See? It's clearly electrical.
